Thanksgiving and Prayer
(1 Corinthians 1:4-9; Colossians 1:3-14; 2 Thessalonians 1:3-4) 3I thank my God every time I remember you. | 3I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, | 3I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, | 3I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, | 3I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you, |
In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy | 4always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, | 4always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, | 4Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, | 4always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer, |
because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, | 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. | 5in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. | 5For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; | 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. |
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. | 6And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. | 6For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. | 6Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: | 6I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. |
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. | 7It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. | 7For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me. | 7Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. | 7It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart, and you are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and establishment of the gospel. |
God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. | 8For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. | 8For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. | 8For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. | 8For God is my witness, how deeply I miss all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. |
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, | 9And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, | 9And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, | 9And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; | 9And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment, |
so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, | 10so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, | 10so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; | 10That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; | 10so that you can approve the things that are superior and can be pure and blameless in the day of Christ, |
filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God. | 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. | 11having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. | 11Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. | 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God. |
Paul's Trials Advance the Gospel
(James 1:2-8) 12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. | 12I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, | 12Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, | 12But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; | 12Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has actually resulted in the advance of the gospel, |
As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. | 13so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. | 13so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, | 13So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; | 13so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is in the cause of Christ. |
And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. | 14And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. | 14and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. | 14And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. | 14Most of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence from my imprisonment and dare even more to speak the message fearlessly. |
It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. | 15Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. | 15Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; | 15Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: | 15To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and strife, but others out of good will. |
The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. | 16The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. | 16the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; | 16The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: | 16These do so out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; |
The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. | 17The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. | 17the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment. | 17But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. | 17the others proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely, seeking to cause me anxiety in my imprisonment. |
But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, | 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, | 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, | 18What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. | 18What does it matter? Just that in every way, whether out of false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed. And in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice |
for I know that through your prayers and God's provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. | 19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, | 19for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, | 19For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, | 19because I know this will lead to my deliverance through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. |
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. | 20as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. | 20according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. | 20According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. | 20My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all boldness, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death. |
To Live is Christ 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. | 21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. | 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. | 21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. | 21For me, living is Christ and dying is gain. |
If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! | 22If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. | 22But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. | 22But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. | 22Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don't know which one I should choose. |
I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; | 23I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. | 23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; | 23For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: | 23I am pressured by both. I have the desire to depart and be with Christ--which is far better-- |
but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. | 24But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. | 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. | 24Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. | 24but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. |
Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, | 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, | 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, | 25And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; | 25Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, |
so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me. | 26so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. | 26so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again. | 26That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. | 26so that, because of me, your confidence may grow in Christ Jesus when I come to you again. |
Be Worthy of the Gospel 27Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel | 27Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, | 27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; | 27Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; | 27Just one thing: Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, working side by side for the faith that comes from the gospel, |
without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God. | 28and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. | 28in no way alarmed by your opponents-- which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. | 28And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. | 28not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your deliverance--and this is from God. |
For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, | 29For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, | 29For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, | 29For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; | 29For it has been given to you on Christ's behalf not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him, |
since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have. | 30engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. | 30experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me. | 30Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me. | 30having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I have. |
