1And he came also unto Derbe and unti Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there named Timothy, son of a believing Jewish woman, however the father a Greek, 2Who was well testified of by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium. 3This one Paul wanted with him to go forth, and having taken, he circumcised him on account of the Jews being in those places; for they all knew his father was a Greek. 4And while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering over to them the decrees (dogmata in greek and latin), those decided on by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, to keep (guard). 5Therefore the churches were confirmed (made solid/stable) in the faith and abounded in number day by day.

6And having passed through Phrygia and the Galatian region, having been forbidden (prevented, hindered) by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia, 7And having come down to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; 8And having passed by Mysia, they came down unto Troas. 9And a vision (greek-horama, latin-visio) appeared to Paul through the night: A certain man of Macedonia was standing and entreating him, and saying, Having passed over into Macedonia, urgently help us. 10And when he has seen the vision, we directly sought to go forth unto Macedonia, concluding that God has called us to preach the gospel to them.

11Having sailed then from Troas, we made straight course unto Samothrace, and the next day unto Nea Polis, 12From there unto Philippi, which is the leading city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were in that city staying some days. 13And on the day of the Sabbath, we went forth outside the city gate beside the river where it was customary for prayer to be, and having sat down, we spoke to the women having gathered.

14And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was listening; of whom the Lord opened the heart to give full attention (devout, pay attention to, set a course and keep it) to the things being spoken by Paul. 15And when she was baptized, and her house, she entreated, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain. And she compelled (constrained, prevailed, constrain by entreaties, latin-coegit-forced) us.

16And it happened, as we were going unto the [place of] prayer, a certain girl (maidservant) having a spirit of Python (divining spirit, a mythical serpent that guarded the oracle at Delphi and had been slain by Apollo) met us, who provided her lords much business (work) by divining (soothsaying, foretelling, predicting, from mantis- a seer, latin-divinando-soothsaying). 17She, having followed Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants (bond-slaves) of the Most High God, who preach to you the way of salvation. 18And this she did for (upon) many days. However Paul having been thoroughly labored (annoyed, troubled, exhausted, worked up) and having turned upon the spirit, said, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out (go out) away from her. And it came out (went out) the same hour.

19And her lords having seen that the hope of their business was gone and having taken hold of Paul and Silas, they dragged them into the marketplace (place of public assembly) before (upon) the rulers; 20And having brought them up to the magistrates (governors, latin-magistratibus), said, These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble (agitate, stir up) our city, 21And preach customs that are not permitted for us to accept nor to practice, being Romans.

22The crowd rose up together against them and the magistrates having torn off their garments, commanded to beat them with rods. 23And having laid many blows upon them, they cast them into prison having charged the jailor (prison keeper) to securely keep (guard) them. 24Who having received such an order, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet into the stocks (wood).

25And at midnight, Paul and Silas, praying, were singing praises (latin- laudabant-praising, greek-hymnoun-to laud, sing a song that celebrates/honors/praises/thanks) to God. And the prisoners listened to them. 26And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And instantly all the doors were opened and the chains (bonds) of all were loosed. 27And the jailor having been roused out of sleep and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn his sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to have escaped (fled out). 28However Paul called out with a great voice, saying, Do no bad (kakon) to yourself; for we are all here. 29And having asked for lights, he rushed in, and having become trembling (terrified), fell down before Paul and Silas. 30And having brought them outside, he said, Lords (Kyrioi, Sirs), what is necessary of me to do, so that I might be saved?

31And they said, Believe upon the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your house. 32And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all those in his house. 33And having taken them in that there hour of the night, he washed them from their wounds; and was baptized, he and all his immediately. 34And having brought them into the house, he placed beside them a table, and rejoiced with all his household having believed in God.

35And the day having come, the magistrates sent the officers (latin-lictores-lictors), saying, Release those there men. 36And the jailor reported these words to Paul, The magistrates have sent, so that you might be released. Now therefore having gone out, depart in peace. 37However Paul said to them, Having beaten us publicly uncondemned (not yet tried), men being Romans, they cast us into prison, and now do they throw us out secretly? No, indeed; but rather having come themselves, let them bring us out. 38And the officers reported these words to the magistrates. And they were fearful, having heard they are Romans. 39And having come, they entreated them, and having brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city. 40And having gone out away from the prison, they came to Lydia; and having seen them, they entreated the brothers and departed.
