Psalm 81

Sing for Joy to God Our Strength

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ׀ (For the one directing). עַֽל־ (According to) הַגִּתִּ֬ית (Gittith). לְאָסָֽף׃ (Of Asaph).

1הַ֭רְנִינוּ (Ring out praise) לֵאלֹהִ֣ים (to God) עוּזֵּ֑נוּ (our strength);

הָ֝רִ֗יעוּ (shout for joy) לֵאלֹהֵ֥י (to the God) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (of Jacob).

2  שְֽׂאוּ־ (Lift up) זִ֭מְרָה (a melody), וּתְנוּ־ (and strike) תֹ֑ף (the timbrel),

כִּנּ֖וֹר (the harp) נָעִ֣ים (sweet-sounding), עִם־ (with) נָֽבֶל׃ (the lute).

3  תִּקְע֣וּ (Blow) בַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (on the New Moon) שׁוֹפָ֑ר (the shofar),

בַּ֝כֵּ֗סֶה (on the full moon) לְי֣וֹם (at the day) חַגֵּֽנוּ׃ (of our Feast).

4  כִּ֤י (For) חֹ֣ק (a statute) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל (O Israel) ה֑וּא (it is),

מִ֝שְׁפָּ֗ט (an ordinance) לֵאלֹהֵ֥י (of the God) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (of Jacob).

5  עֵ֤דוּת׀ (As a testimony) בִּֽיה֘וֹסֵ֤ף (in Joseph) שָׂמ֗וֹ (He established it)

בְּ֭צֵאתוֹ (in His going forth) עַל־ (over) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt);

שְׂפַ֖ת (a language) לֹא־ (that not) יָדַ֣עְתִּי (I did know) אֶשְׁמָֽע׃ (I heard):

6  הֲסִיר֣וֹתִי (I turned aside) מִסֵּ֣בֶל (from the burden) שִׁכְמ֑וֹ (his shoulder);

כַּ֝פָּ֗יו (his hands) מִדּ֥וּד (from the basket) תַּעֲבֹֽרְנָה׃ (pass over).

7  בַּצָּרָ֥ה (In the time of distress) קָרָ֗אתָ (you called) וָאֲחַ֫לְּצֶ֥ךָּ (and I drew you out);

אֶ֭עֶנְךָ (I answered you) בְּסֵ֣תֶר (in the secret place) רַ֑עַם (of thunder);

אֶבְחָֽנְךָ֨ (I tested you) עַל־ (at) מֵ֖י (the waters) מְרִיבָ֣ה (of Meribah).

סֶֽלָה׃ (Selah)

8  שְׁמַ֣ע (hear), עַ֭מִּי (O My people), וְאָעִ֣ידָה (and I will testify) בָּ֑ךְ (against you),

יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל (O Israel), אִם־ (if) תִּֽשְׁמַֽע־ (you would listen) לִֽי׃ (to Me).

9  לֹֽא־ (Not) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall there be) בְ֭ךָ (among you) אֵ֣ל (a god) זָ֑ר (strange)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִ֝שְׁתַּחֲוֶ֗ה (shall you bow down) לְאֵ֣ל (to god) נֵכָֽר׃ (foreign).

10  אָנֹכִ֨י׀ (I am) יְה֘וָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God),

הַֽ֭מַּעַלְךָ (who brought you out) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt).

הַרְחֶב־ (Open wide) פִּ֝֗יךָ (your mouth)

וַאֲמַלְאֵֽהוּ׃ (and I will fill it).

11  וְלֹא־ (Not) שָׁמַ֣ע (would hear) עַמִּ֣י (My people) לְקוֹלִ֑י (My voice);

וְ֝יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (and Israel) לֹא־ (not) אָ֥בָה (has consented) לִֽי׃ (to Me).

12  וָֽ֭אֲשַׁלְּחֵהוּ (And I sent them away) בִּשְׁרִיר֣וּת (in the stubbornness) לִבָּ֑ם (of their hearts)

יֵ֝לְכ֗וּ (to walk) בְּֽמוֹעֲצוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (by their own counsels).

13  ל֗וּ (If only) עַ֭מִּי (My people) שֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ (would listen) לִ֑י (to Me)—

יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) בִּדְרָכַ֥י (in My ways) יְהַלֵּֽכוּ׃ (would walk)!

14  כִּ֭מְעַט (In a moment) אוֹיְבֵיהֶ֣ם (their enemies) אַכְנִ֑יעַ (I would subdue),

וְעַ֥ל (and over) צָ֝רֵיהֶ֗ם (their adversaries) אָשִׁ֥יב (I would turn back) יָדִֽי׃ (My hand).

15  מְשַׂנְאֵ֣י (Those hating) יְ֭הוָה (YHWH) יְכַֽחֲשׁוּ־ (would feign obedience) ל֑וֹ (before Him),

וִיהִ֖י (and would be) עִתָּ֣ם (their time) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

16  וַֽ֭יַּאֲכִילֵהוּ (And He would feed him) מֵחֵ֣לֶב (of the fat) חִטָּ֑ה (of wheat),

וּ֝מִצּ֗וּר (and from the rock) דְּבַ֣שׁ (with honey) אַשְׂבִּיעֶֽךָ׃ (I would satisfy you).
