Rulers and Prophets Condemned

1  וָאֹמַ֗ר (And I said),

שִׁמְעוּ־ (Hear), נָא֙ (now), רָאשֵׁ֣י (O heads) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob),

וּקְצִינֵ֖י (and rulers) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel);

הֲל֣וֹא (Is it not) לָכֶ֔ם (for you⁺) לָדַ֖עַת (to know) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ (justice)?

2  שֹׂ֥נְאֵי (Those hating) ט֖וֹב (good), וְאֹ֣הֲבֵי (and loving) רָעָה (evil);

גֹּזְלֵ֤י (those tearing away) עוֹרָם֙ (their skin) מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (from upon them)

וּשְׁאֵרָ֖ם (and their flesh) מֵעַ֥ל (from) עַצְמוֹתָֽם׃ (their bones);

3  וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and who) אָכְלוּ֮ (eat) שְׁאֵ֣ר (the flesh) עַמִּי֒ (of My people),

וְעוֹרָם֙ (and their skin) מֵעֲלֵיהֶ֣ם (from them) הִפְשִׁ֔יטוּ (strip off)

וְאֶת־ (and) עַצְמֹֽתֵיהֶ֖ם (their bones), פִּצֵּ֑חוּ (break)

וּפָרְשׂוּ֙ (and spread them), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) בַּסִּ֔יר (in the pot),

וּכְבָשָׂ֖ר (and like flesh) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) קַלָּֽחַת׃ (of a cauldron).

4  אָ֚ז (Then) יִזְעֲק֣וּ (they will cry) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH),

וְלֹ֥א (not) יַעֲנֶ֖ה (will He answer) אוֹתָ֑ם (them)

וְיַסְתֵּ֨ר (and He will hide) פָּנָ֤יו (His face) מֵהֶם֙ (from them) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time), הַהִ֔יא (that)

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) הֵרֵ֖עוּ (have been evil) מַעַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃פ (their deeds).

5  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

עַל־ (concerning) הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים (the prophets)

הַמַּתְעִ֣ים (leading astray), אֶת־ (-) עַמִּ֑י (my people)

הַנֹּשְׁכִ֤ים (those biting) בְּשִׁנֵּיהֶם֙ (with their teeth),

וְקָרְא֣וּ (while they call out), שָׁל֔וֹם (Peace);

וַאֲשֶׁר֙ (and who) לֹא־ (do not) יִתֵּ֣ן (give) עַל־ (to) פִּיהֶ֔ם (their mouth),

וְקִדְּשׁ֥וּ (and they have sanctified) עָלָ֖יו (against him) מִלְחָמָֽה׃ (war).

6  לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) לַ֤יְלָה (a night is) לָכֶם֙ (unto you⁺) מֵֽחָז֔וֹן (without a vision);

וְחָשְׁכָ֥ה (and it will grow dark) לָכֶ֖ם (for you⁺) מִקְּסֹ֑ם (without divination);

וּבָ֤אָה (and will go down) הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (the sun) עַל־ (on) הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים (the prophets),

וְקָדַ֥ר (and will turn black) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over them) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (the daylight).

7  וּבֹ֣שׁוּ (And will be ashamed), הַחֹזִ֗ים (the seers)

וְחָֽפְרוּ֙ (and will be disgraced). הַקֹּ֣סְמִ֔ים (The diviners)

וְעָט֥וּ (and they will cover) עַל־ (over) שָׂפָ֖ם (their mustache); כֻּלָּ֑ם (all of them)

כִּ֛י (for) אֵ֥ין (there is no) מַעֲנֵ֖ה (answer from) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

8  וְאוּלָ֗ם (However) אָנֹכִ֞י (I) מָלֵ֤אתִי (am filled) כֹ֙חַ֙ (with power)

אֶת־ (by) ר֣וּחַ (the Spirit) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

וּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט (and justice), וּגְבוּרָ֑ה (and strength),

לְהַגִּ֤יד (to declare) לְיַֽעֲקֹב֙ (to Jacob) פִּשְׁע֔וֹ (his transgression),

וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (and to Israel) חַטָּאתֽוֹ׃ס (his sin).

9  שִׁמְעוּ־ (Hear) נָ֣א (now), זֹ֗את (this), רָאשֵׁי֙ (O heads) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob),

וּקְצִינֵ֖י (and rulers) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel),

הַֽמֲתַעֲבִ֣ים (those abhorring) מִשְׁפָּ֔ט (justice),

וְאֵ֥ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הַיְשָׁרָ֖ה (that is upright) יְעַקֵּֽשׁוּ׃ (they pervert).

10  בֹּנֶ֥ה (Those building up) צִיּ֖וֹן (Zion) בְּדָמִ֑ים (with bloodshed),

וִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (and Jerusalem) בְּעַוְלָֽה׃ (with injustice).

11  רָאשֶׁ֣יהָ׀ (Her heads) בְּשֹׁ֣חַד (for a bribe), יִשְׁפֹּ֗טוּ (give judgment)

וְכֹהֲנֶ֙יהָ֙ (and her priests) בִּמְחִ֣יר (for a price), יוֹר֔וּ (give instruction)

וּנְבִיאֶ֖יהָ (and her prophets) בְּכֶ֣סֶף (for silver). יִקְסֹ֑מוּ (Practice divination)

וְעַל־ (and on) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), יִשָּׁעֵ֣נוּ (they still would lean) לֵאמֹ֔ר (and say),

הֲל֤וֹא (Is not) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּקִרְבֵּ֔נוּ (among us)

לֹֽא־ (no) תָב֥וֹא (can come) עָלֵ֖ינוּ (upon us) רָעָֽה׃ (harm).

12  לָכֵן֙ (Therefore) בִּגְלַלְכֶ֔ם (because of you⁺)

צִיּ֖וֹן (Zion) שָׂדֶ֣ה (as a field), תֵֽחָרֵ֑שׁ (will be plowed)

וִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (and Jerusalem) עִיִּ֣ין (heaps of ruins), תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה (will become)

וְהַ֥ר (and the mountain) הַבַּ֖יִת (of the house) לְבָמ֥וֹת (like the heights) יָֽעַר׃פ (of the forest).
