Holiness Required of Priests
1 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), אֱמֹ֥ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests), בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אַהֲרֹ֑ן (of Aaron), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and you shall say) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them): לְנֶ֥פֶשׁ (For a dead soul) לֹֽא־ (none) יִטַּמָּ֖א (shall make himself unlcean) בְּעַמָּֽיו׃ (among his people),
2 כִּ֚י (except) אִם־ (for) לִשְׁאֵר֔וֹ (his close relative), הַקָּרֹ֖ב (who are near) אֵלָ֑יו (to him)— לְאִמּ֣וֹ (for his mother), וּלְאָבִ֔יו (and for his father), וְלִבְנ֥וֹ (and for his son), וּלְבִתּ֖וֹ (and for his daughter), וּלְאָחִֽיו׃ (and for his brother),
3 וְלַאֲחֹת֤וֹ (and for his sister) הַבְּתוּלָה֙ (the virgin) הַקְּרוֹבָ֣ה (who is near) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) הָיְתָ֖ה (has had) לְאִ֑ישׁ (a husband). לָ֖הּ (For her) יִטַּמָּֽא׃ (he shall make himself unlean).
4 לֹ֥א (Not) יִטַּמָּ֖א (he shall make himself unclean), בַּ֣עַל (as a husband) בְּעַמָּ֑יו (among his people), לְהֵ֖חַלּֽוֹ׃ (to profane himself).
5 לֹֽא־ (Not) יִקְרְחָה (they shall make) קָרְחָה֙ (baldness) בְּרֹאשָׁ֔ם (on their heads) וּפְאַ֥ת (and the edges) זְקָנָ֖ם (of their beards), לֹ֣א (and not) יְגַלֵּ֑חוּ (shall they shave), וּבִ֨בְשָׂרָ֔ם (and in their flesh) לֹ֥א (not) יִשְׂרְט֖וּ (shall they cut) שָׂרָֽטֶת׃ (a cutting).
6 קְדֹשִׁ֤ים (Holy) יִהְיוּ֙ (they shall be) לֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (to their God), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יְחַלְּל֔וּ (the shall profane) שֵׁ֖ם (the name) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (of their God). כִּי֩ (For) אֶת־ (-) אִשֵּׁ֨י (the fire offerings) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH), לֶ֧חֶם (the bread) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֛ם (of their God), הֵ֥ם (they) מַקְרִיבִ֖ם (bring near); וְהָ֥יוּ (and they shall be) קֹֽדֶשׁ׃ (holy).
7 אִשָּׁ֨ה (A woman), זֹנָ֤ה (a prostitute) וַחֲלָלָה֙ (or defiled), לֹ֣א (not) יִקָּ֔חוּ (they shall take), וְאִשָּׁ֛ה (and a woman) גְּרוּשָׁ֥ה (cast out) מֵאִישָׁ֖הּ (from her husband) לֹ֣א (not) יִקָּ֑חוּ (shall they take); כִּֽי־ (for) קָדֹ֥שׁ (holy) ה֖וּא (he is) לֵאלֹהָֽיו׃ (to his God).
8 וְקִדַּשְׁתּ֔וֹ (And you shall sanctify him), כִּֽי־ (for) אֶת־ (-) לֶ֥חֶם (the bread) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (of your God) ה֣וּא (he) מַקְרִ֑יב (brings near). קָדֹשׁ֙ (Holy) יִֽהְיֶה־ (he is) לָּ֔ךְ (to you), כִּ֣י (for) קָד֔וֹשׁ (holy) אֲנִ֥י (I am), יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), מְקַדִּשְׁכֶֽם׃ (who sanctifies you⁺).
9 וּבַת֙ (And the daughter) אִ֣ישׁ (of a man) כֹּהֵ֔ן (of a priest), כִּ֥י (if) תֵחֵ֖ל (she profanes herself) לִזְנ֑וֹת (by playing the prostitute), אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֙יהָ֙ (her father) הִ֣יא (she) מְחַלֶּ֔לֶת (is profaning); בָּאֵ֖שׁ (with the fire) תִּשָּׂרֵֽף׃ס (she shall be burned).
10 וְהַכֹּהֵן֩ (And the priest) הַגָּד֨וֹל (the high) מֵאֶחָ֜יו (among his brothers), אֲֽשֶׁר־ (whose) יוּצַ֥ק (is poured) עַל־ (on) רֹאשׁ֣וֹ׀ (head) שֶׁ֤מֶן (the oil) הַמִּשְׁחָה֙ (anointing), וּמִלֵּ֣א (and who has filled) אֶת־ (-) יָד֔וֹ (his hand) לִלְבֹּ֖שׁ (to put on) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּגָדִ֑ים (the garments) אֶת־ (-), רֹאשׁוֹ֙ (his head) לֹ֣א (not) יִפְרָ֔ע (shall uncover), וּבְגָדָ֖יו (and his clothes) לֹ֥א (not) יִפְרֹֽם׃ (shall he tear).
11 וְעַ֛ל (And near) כָּל־ (any) נַפְשֹׁ֥ת (soul) מֵ֖ת (dead) לֹ֣א (not) יָבֹ֑א (shall he go); לְאָבִ֥יו (for his father) וּלְאִמּ֖וֹ (or for his mother) לֹ֥א (not) יִטַּמָּֽא׃ (shall he make himself unclean).
12 וּמִן־ (And) הַמִּקְדָּשׁ֙ (of the sanctuary) לֹ֣א (not) יֵצֵ֔א (shall he go out), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יְחַלֵּ֔ל (shall he profane) אֵ֖ת (-) מִקְדַּ֣שׁ (the sanctuary) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (of his God); כִּ֡י (for) נֵ֠זֶר (the diadem) שֶׁ֣מֶן (of the oil) מִשְׁחַ֧ת (of anointing) אֱלֹהָ֛יו (of his God) עָלָ֖יו (is on him). אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
13 וְה֕וּא (And he) אִשָּׁ֥ה (a wife) בִבְתוּלֶ֖יהָ (in her virginity) יִקָּֽח׃ (shall take).
14 אַלְמָנָ֤ה (A widow) וּגְרוּשָׁה֙ (or a divorced woman) וַחֲלָלָ֣ה (or a defiled woman) זֹנָ֔ה (a prostitute), אֶת־ (-) אֵ֖לֶּה (these) לֹ֣א (not) יִקָּ֑ח (he shall take); כִּ֛י (but) אִם־ (rather) בְּתוּלָ֥ה (a virgin) מֵעַמָּ֖יו (from his people) יִקַּ֥ח (he shall take) אִשָּֽׁה׃ (as a wife).
15 וְלֹֽא־ (Not) יְחַלֵּ֥ל (shall he profane) זַרְע֖וֹ (his seed) בְּעַמָּ֑יו (among his people). כִּ֛י (For) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מְקַדְּשֽׁוֹ׃פ (who sanctifies him).
Restrictions against Those with Blemishes
16 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
17 דַּבֵּ֥ר (Speak) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אִ֣ישׁ (A man) מִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֞ (from your seed) לְדֹרֹתָ֗ם (for their generations) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) יִהְיֶ֥ה (has) בוֹ֙ (in him) מ֔וּם (a blemish) לֹ֣א (not) יִקְרַ֔ב (shall draw near) לְהַקְרִ֖יב (to bring near) לֶ֥חֶם (the bread) אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ (of his God).
18 כִּ֥י (For) כָל־ (any) אִ֛ישׁ (man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בּ֥וֹ (in him) מ֖וּם (has a blemish) לֹ֣א (not) יִקְרָ֑ב (shall draw near); אִ֤ישׁ (a man) עִוֵּר֙ (blind), א֣וֹ (or) פִסֵּ֔חַ (lame), א֥וֹ (or) חָרֻ֖ם (disfigured), א֥וֹ (or) שָׂרֽוּעַ׃ (a limb too long),
19 א֣וֹ (or) אִ֔ישׁ (a man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יִהְיֶ֥ה (has) ב֖וֹ (in him) שֶׁ֣בֶר (a fracture) רָ֑גֶל (of foot), א֖וֹ (or) שֶׁ֥בֶר (a fracture) יָֽד׃ (of hand),
20 אֽוֹ־ (or) גִבֵּ֣ן (a hunchback), אוֹ־ (or) דַ֔ק (a dwarf), א֖וֹ (or) תְּבַלֻּ֣ל (a man who has a defect) בְּעֵינ֑וֹ (in his eye), א֤וֹ (or) גָרָב֙ (itch), א֣וֹ (or) יַלֶּ֔פֶת (scab), א֖וֹ (or) מְר֥וֹחַ (a crushed) אָֽשֶׁךְ׃ (testicle).
21 כָּל־ (Any) אִ֞ישׁ (man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בּ֣וֹ (in him) מ֗וּם (has a blemish) מִזֶּ֙רַע֙ (from the seed) אַהֲרֹ֣ן (of Aaron) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), לֹ֣א (not) יִגַּ֔שׁ (shall draw near) לְהַקְרִ֖יב (to bring near) אֶת־ (-) אִשֵּׁ֣י (the fire offerings) יְהוָ֑ה (to YHWH); מ֣וּם (he has a blemish) בּ֔וֹ (in him) אֵ֚ת (-). לֶ֣חֶם (The bread) אֱלֹהָ֔יו (of his God) לֹ֥א (not) יִגַּ֖שׁ (shall draw near) לְהַקְרִֽיב׃ (to bring near).
22 לֶ֣חֶם (The bread) אֱלֹהָ֔יו (of his God) מִקָּדְשֵׁ֖י (from the holies) הַקֳּדָשִׁ֑ים (of holies) וּמִן־ (and from) הַקֳּדָשִׁ֖ים (the holy things) יֹאכֵֽל׃ (he may eat).
23 אַ֣ךְ (Only) אֶל־ (into) הַפָּרֹ֜כֶת (the veil) לֹ֣א (not) יָבֹ֗א (he shall enter), וְאֶל־ (and to) הַמִּזְבֵּ֛חַ (the altar). לֹ֥א (Not) יִגַּ֖שׁ (he shall draw near), כִּֽי־ (because) מ֣וּם (a blemish) בּ֑וֹ (is in him), וְלֹ֤א (and not) יְחַלֵּל֙ (shall he profane) אֶת־ (-) מִקְדָּשַׁ֔י (My sanctuaries). כִּ֛י (For) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מְקַדְּשָֽׁם׃ (who sanctifies them).
24 וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron), וְאֶל־ (and to) בָּנָ֑יו (his sons), וְאֶֽל־ (and to) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).
