War between Asa and Baasha
(1 Kings 15:16–22)

1  בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (In year) שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (thirty) וָשֵׁשׁ֙ (and sixth) לְמַלְכ֣וּת (of the reign) אָסָ֔א (of Asa) עָלָ֞ה (came up) בַּעְשָׁ֤א (Baasha) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) עַל־ (against) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), וַיִּ֖בֶן (and he fortified) אֶת־ (-) הָרָמָ֑ה (Ramah) לְבִלְתִּ֗י (so as to not) תֵּ֚ת (allow) יוֹצֵ֣א (go out) וָבָ֔א (or come in) לְאָסָ֖א (to Asa) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 2  וַיֹּצֵ֨א (And brought) אָסָ֜א (Asa) כֶּ֣סֶף (silver) וְזָהָ֗ב (and gold) מֵאֹֽצְר֛וֹת (from the treasuries) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) וּבֵ֣ית (and the house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king), וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (and he sent it) אֶל־ (to) בֶּן־ (Ben-) הֲדַד֙ (hadad) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אֲרָ֔ם (of Aram), הַיּוֹשֵׁ֥ב (who dwelt) בְּדַרְמֶ֖שֶׂק (in Damascus), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 3  בְּרִית֙ (A covenant) בֵּינִ֣י (is between me) וּבֵינֶ֔ךָ (and between you), וּבֵ֥ין (and between) אָבִ֖י (my father) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) אָבִ֑יךָ (your father). הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), שָׁלַ֤חְתִּֽי (I have sent) לְךָ֙ (you) כֶּ֣סֶף (silver) וְזָהָ֔ב (and gold). לֵ֞ךְ (Go), הָפֵ֣ר (break) בְּרִֽיתְךָ֗ (your covenant) אֶת־ (with) בַּעְשָׁא֙ (Baasha) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְיַעֲלֶ֖ה (so that he will withdraw) מֵעָלָֽי׃ (from me).

4  וַיִּשְׁמַ֨ע (And listened) בֶּן (Ben-) הֲדַ֜ד (hadad) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) אָסָ֗א (Asa), וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח (and he sent) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֨י (the captains) הַחֲיָלִ֤ים (of the forces) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) לוֹ֙ (unto him) אֶל־ (against) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel). וַיַּכּוּ֙ (And they attacked) אֶת־ (-) עִיּ֣וֹן (Ijon), וְאֶת־ (and) דָּ֔ן (Dan), וְאֵ֖ת (and) אָבֵ֣ל (Abel-) מָ֑יִם (maim), וְאֵ֥ת (and) כָּֽל־ (all) מִסְכְּנ֖וֹת (the storage) עָרֵ֥י (cities) נַפְתָּלִֽי׃ (of Naphtali).

5  וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ (at hearing) בַּעְשָׁ֔א (Baasha) וַיֶּחְדַּ֕ל (that he stopped) מִבְּנ֖וֹת (building) אֶת־ (-) הָרָמָ֑ה (Ramah) וַיַּשְׁבֵּ֖ת (and ceased) אֶת־ (-) מְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃ס (His work). 6  וְאָסָ֣א (And Asa) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king) לָקַח֙ (took) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), וַיִּשְׂא֞וּ (and they carried away) אֶת־ (-) אַבְנֵ֤י (the stones) הָֽרָמָה֙ (of Ramah), וְאֶת־ (and) עֵצֶ֔יהָ (and the timbers) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) בָּנָ֖ה (had built) בַּעְשָׁ֑א (Baasha). וַיִּ֣בֶן (And he built) בָּהֶ֔ם (with them) אֶת־ (-) גֶּ֖בַע (Geba) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּצְפָּֽה׃ס (Mizpah).

Hanani’s Message to Asa

7  וּבָעֵ֣ת (And at the time) הַהִ֗יא (that) בָּ֚א (came) חֲנָ֣נִי (Hanani) הָרֹאֶ֔ה (the seer) אֶל־ (to) אָסָ֖א (Asa) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), בְּהִשָּׁ֨עֶנְךָ֜ (Because of your leaning) עַל־ (on) מֶ֤לֶךְ (the king) אֲרָם֙ (of Aram) וְלֹ֤א (and not) נִשְׁעַ֙נְתָּ֙ (leaning) עַל־ (on) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) נִמְלַ֛ט (has escaped) חֵ֥יל (the force) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) אֲרָ֖ם (of Aram) מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃ (from your hand). 8  הֲלֹ֧א (Was it not that) הַכּוּשִׁ֣ים (the Cushites) וְהַלּוּבִ֗ים (and the Libyans) הָי֨וּ (were) לְחַ֧יִל׀ (as an army) לָרֹ֛ב (of multitudes), לְרֶ֥כֶב (of chariots) וּלְפָרָשִׁ֖ים (and horsemen) לְהַרְבֵּ֣ה (many) מְאֹ֑ד (very)? וּבְהִשָּֽׁעֶנְךָ֥ (And in your leaning) עַל־ (on) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), נְתָנָ֥ם (He delivered them) בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ (into your hand). 9  כִּ֣י (For) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH)— עֵינָ֞יו (His eyes) מְשֹׁטְט֤וֹת (go to and fro) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth), לְ֠הִתְחַזֵּק (to show Himself strong) עִם־ (on behalf of those) לְבָבָ֥ם (whose heart is) שָׁלֵ֛ם (perfect) אֵלָ֖יו (to Him). נִסְכַּ֣לְתָּ (You have acted foolishly) עַל־ (regarding) זֹ֑את (this); כִּ֣י (therefore) מֵעַ֔תָּה (from now on) יֵ֥שׁ (there will be) עִמְּךָ֖ (with you) מִלְחָמֽוֹת׃ (wars).

10  וַיִּכְעַ֨ס (And was angry) אָסָ֜א (Asa) אֶל־ (with) הָרֹאֶ֗ה (the seer), וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֙הוּ֙ (and he put him) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) הַמַּהְפֶּ֔כֶת (of the stocks), כִּֽי־ (for) בְזַ֥עַף (he was in a rage) עִמּ֖וֹ (at him) עַל־ (because) זֹ֑את (of this). וַיְרַצֵּ֥ץ (And oppressed) אָסָ֛א (Asa) מִן־ (some) הָעָ֖ם (of the people) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִֽיא׃ (that).

The Death and Burial of Asa

11  וְהִנֵּה֙ (And behold), דִּבְרֵ֣י (the acts) אָסָ֔א (of Asa), הָרִאשׁוֹנִ֖ים (the first) וְהָאַחֲרוֹנִ֑ים (and the last), הִנָּ֤ם (indeed) כְּתוּבִים֙ (are written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֣פֶר (the Book) הַמְּלָכִ֔ים (of the Kings) לִיהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) וְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (and Israel). 12  וַיֶּחֱלֶ֣א (And became diseased) אָסָ֡א (Asa) בִּשְׁנַת֩ (in the year) שְׁלוֹשִׁ֨ים (thirty) וָתֵ֤שַׁע (and ninth) לְמַלְכוּתוֹ֙ (of his reign) בְּרַגְלָ֔יו (in his feet), עַד־ (until was) לְמַ֖עְלָה (was severe) חָלְי֑וֹ (his disease) וְגַם־ (yet) בְּחָלְיוֹ֙ (in his disease) לֹא־ (not) דָרַ֣שׁ (he did seek) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כִּ֖י (but) בָּרֹפְאִֽים׃ (among the healers).

13  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And rested) אָסָ֖א (Asa) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (his fathers), וַיָּ֕מָת (and he died) בִּשְׁנַ֛ת (in the year) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) וְאַחַ֖ת (and first) לְמָלְכֽוֹ׃ (of his reign). 14  וַיִּקְבְּרֻ֣הוּ (And they buried him) בְקִבְרֹתָ֗יו (in his own tomb), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) כָּֽרָה־ (he had made) לוֹ֮ (for himself) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִיד֒ (of David), וַיַּשְׁכִּיבֻ֗הוּ (and they laid him) בַּמִּשְׁכָּב֙ (in the bed) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) מִלֵּא֙ (was filled) בְּשָׂמִ֣ים (with spices) וּזְנִ֔ים (and diverse kinds) מְרֻקָּחִ֖ים (of mixtures) בְּמִרְקַ֣חַת (in ointments) מַעֲשֶׂ֑ה (with perfumed work); וַיִּשְׂרְפוּ־ (and they made) ל֥וֹ (for him) שְׂרֵפָ֖ה (a burning) גְּדוֹלָ֥ה (great) עַד־ (very) לִמְאֹֽד׃פ (exceedingly).
