Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah
(1 Kings 15:23–24)

1  וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (Jehoshaphat) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּ֑יו (in his place), וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֖ק (and he strengthened himself) עַל־ (against) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel). 2  וַיִּ֨תֶּן־ (And he put) חַ֔יִל (troops) בְּכָל־ (in all) עָרֵ֥י (cities) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) הַבְּצֻר֑וֹת (the fortified), וַיִּתֵּ֤ן (and he put) נְצִיבִים֙ (garrisons) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וּבְעָרֵ֣י (and in the cities) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לָכַ֖ד (had captured) אָסָ֥א (Asa) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

3  וַיְהִ֥י (And was) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עִם־ (with) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט (Jehoshaphat) כִּ֣י (because) הָלַ֗ךְ (he walked) בְּדַרְכֵ֞י (in ways) דָּוִ֤יד (of David) אָבִיו֙ (his father) הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים (the former). וְלֹ֥א (And not) דָרַ֖שׁ (he did seek) לַבְּעָלִֽים׃ (the Baals), 4  כִּ֠י (but) לֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י (the God) אָבִיו֙ (of his father) דָּרָ֔שׁ (he sought), וּבְמִצְוֺתָ֖יו (and in His commandments) הָלָ֑ךְ (he walked) וְלֹ֖א (and not) כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (according to the acts) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 5  וַיָּ֨כֶן (And established) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ (the kingdom) בְּיָד֔וֹ (in his hand). וַיִּתְּנ֧וּ (And gave) כָל־ (all) יְהוּדָ֛ה (Judah) מִנְחָ֖ה (tribute) לִיהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט (to Jehoshaphat), וַֽיְהִי־ (and were) ל֥וֹ (unto him) עֹֽשֶׁר־ (riches) וְכָב֖וֹד (and honor) לָרֹֽב׃ (in abundance). 6  וַיִּגְבַּ֥הּ (Was lifted up) לִבּ֖וֹ (his heart) בְּדַרְכֵ֣י (in the ways) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְע֗וֹד (and moreover) הֵסִ֛יר (he turned aside) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּמ֥וֹת (the high places) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים (the Asherah poles) מִיהוּדָֽה׃פ (from Judah).

7  וּבִשְׁנַ֨ת (And in the year) שָׁל֜וֹשׁ (third) לְמָלְכ֗וֹ (of his reign) שָׁלַ֤ח (he sent) לְשָׂרָיו֙ (his leaders) לְבֶן־ (Ben-), חַ֙יִל֙ (hail) וּלְעֹבַדְיָ֣ה (and Obadiah) וְלִזְכַרְיָ֔ה (and Zechariah) וְלִנְתַנְאֵ֖ל (and Nethanel) וּלְמִיכָיָ֑הוּ (and Michaiah), לְלַמֵּ֖ד (to teach) בְּעָרֵ֥י (in the cities) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah), 8  וְעִמָּהֶ֣ם (and with them) הַלְוִיִּ֗ם (the Levites)— שְֽׁמַֽעְיָ֡הוּ (Shemaiah), וּנְתַנְיָ֡הוּ (and Nethaniah), וּזְבַדְיָ֡הוּ (and Zebadiah), וַעֲשָׂהאֵ֡ל (and Asahel), וּשְׁמִרִימוֹת (and Shemiramoth), וִֽיהוֹנָתָן֩ (and Jehonathan), וַאֲדֹ֨נִיָּ֧הוּ (and Adonijah), וְטֽוֹבִיָּ֛הוּ (and Tobijah), וְט֥וֹב (and Tob-) אֲדוֹנִיָּ֖ה (and adonijah), הַלְוִיִּ֑ם (the Levites)— וְעִמָּהֶ֛ם (and with them) אֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע (Elishama) וִֽיהוֹרָ֖ם (and Jehoram) הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ (the priests). 9  וַֽיְלַמְּדוּ֙ (And they taught) בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה (in Judah), וְעִ֨מָּהֶ֔ם (and with them) סֵ֖פֶר (was the Book) תּוֹרַ֣ת (of the Law) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיָּסֹ֙בּוּ֙ (and they went around) בְּכָל־ (in all) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וַֽיְלַמְּד֖וּ (and they taught) בָּעָֽם׃ (the people).

10  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And fell) פַּ֣חַד (the dread) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) עַ֚ל (on) כָּל־ (all) מַמְלְכ֣וֹת (the kingdoms) הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת (of the lands) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that were) סְבִיב֣וֹת (around) יְהוּדָ֑ה (Judah), וְלֹ֥א (and not) נִלְחֲמ֖וּ (they did fight) עִם־ (against) יְהוֹשָׁפָֽט׃ (Jehoshaphat). 11  וּמִן־ (And some) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים (of the Philistines) מְבִיאִ֧ים (brought) לִֽיהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט (Jehoshaphat) מִנְחָ֖ה (gifts) וְכֶ֣סֶף (and silver as) מַשָּׂ֑א (tribute), גַּ֣ם (and) הָֽעַרְבִיאִ֗ים (the Arabs) מְבִיאִ֥ים (brought) לוֹ֙ (to him) צֹ֕אן (from the flock) אֵילִ֔ים (rams) שִׁבְעַ֤ת (seven) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) וּשְׁבַ֣ע (and seven) מֵא֔וֹת (hundred), וּתְיָשִׁ֕ים (and male goats) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) וּשְׁבַ֥ע (and seven) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).

12  וַיְהִ֧י (And) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט (Jehoshaphat) הֹלֵ֥ךְ (went on) וְגָדֵ֖ל (and becoming great) עַד־ (even to) לְמָ֑עְלָה (increasingly), וַיִּ֧בֶן (and he built) בִּֽיהוּדָ֛ה (in Judah) בִּירָנִיּ֖וֹת (fortresses) וְעָרֵ֥י (and cities) מִסְכְּנֽוֹת׃ (storage). 13  וּמְלָאכָ֥ה (And property) רַבָּ֛ה (much) הָ֥יָה (was) ל֖וֹ (unto him) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וְאַנְשֵׁ֧י (and the men) מִלְחָמָ֛ה (of war), גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי (mighty men) חַ֖יִל (of valor), בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (were in Jerusalem). 14  וְאֵ֥לֶּה (And these are) פְקֻדָּתָ֖ם (their numbers) לְבֵ֣ית (according to the houses) אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (of their fathers):

לִֽיהוּדָה֙ (Of Judah) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) אֲלָפִ֔ים (of thousands):

עַדְנָ֣ה (Adnah) הַשָּׂ֔ר (the captain), וְעִמּוֹ֙ (and with him) גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי (mighty men) חַ֔יִל (of valor) שְׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

15  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָד֖וֹ (him) יְהוֹחָנָ֣ן (Jehohanan) הַשָּׂ֑ר (the captain), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) מָאתַ֥יִם (two hundred) וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים (and eighty) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

16  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדוֹ֙ (him) עֲמַסְיָ֣ה (Amasiah) בֶן־ (son) זִכְרִ֔י (of Zichri), הַמִּתְנַדֵּ֖ב (who willingly offered himself) לַיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), וְעִמּ֛וֹ (and with him) מָאתַ֥יִם (two hundred) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) גִּבּ֥וֹר (mighty men) חָֽיִל׃ס (of valor).

17  וּמִ֨ן־ (And) בִּנְיָמִ֔ן (of Benjamin):

גִּבּ֥וֹר (A mighty man) חַ֖יִל (of valor), אֶלְיָדָ֑ע (Eliada), וְעִמּ֛וֹ (and with him) נֹֽשְׁקֵי־ (armed) קֶ֥שֶׁת (with bow) וּמָגֵ֖ן (and shield) מָאתַ֥יִם (two hundred) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

18  וְעַל־ (And next) יָד֖וֹ (to him) יְהוֹזָבָ֑ד (Jehozabad), וְעִמּ֛וֹ (and with him) מֵאָֽה־ (a hundred) וּשְׁמוֹנִ֥ים (and eighty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) חֲלוּצֵ֥י (equipped) צָבָֽא׃ס (for war).

19  אֵ֖לֶּה (These) הַמְשָׁרְתִ֣ים (served) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), מִלְּבַ֞ד (besides) אֲשֶׁר־ (those whom) נָתַ֥ן (put) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) בְּעָרֵ֥י (in cities) הַמִּבְצָ֖ר (the fortified) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) יְהוּדָֽה׃פ (Judah).
