The People of Jerusalem

1  וְכָל־ (And all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) הִתְיַחְשׂ֔וּ (was reckoned), וְהִנָּ֣ם (and behold), כְּתוּבִ֔ים (they are written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֖פֶר (the Book) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). וִיהוּדָ֛ה (And Judah) הָגְל֥וּ (was removed) לְבָבֶ֖ל (to Babylon) בְּמַעֲלָֽם׃ס (for their trespass).

2  וְהַיּוֹשְׁבִים֙ (And the dwellers) הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים (first) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) בַּאֲחֻזָּתָ֖ם (in their possessions) בְּעָרֵיהֶ֑ם (in their cities) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (were the priests), הַלְוִיִּ֖ם (the Levites), וְהַנְּתִינִֽים׃ (and the Nethinim).

3  וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (And in Jerusalem) יָשְׁב֔וּ (dwelt) מִן־ (some) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah), וּמִן־ (and some) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֑ן (of Benjamin), וּמִן־ (and some) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) אֶפְרַ֖יִם (of Ephraim) וּמְנַשֶּֽׁה׃ (and Manasseh):

4  עוּתַ֨י (Uthai) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּיה֤וּד (of Ammihud), בֶּן־ (son) עָמְרִי֙ (of Omri), בֶּן־ (son) אִמְרִ֣י (of Imri), בֶן־ (son) בָּנִימִן־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (of Bani) פֶ֖רֶץ (of Perez) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah).

5  וּמִן־ (And) הַשִּׁ֣ילוֹנִ֔י (of the Shilonite):

עֲשָׂיָ֥ה (Asaiah) הַבְּכ֖וֹר (the firstborn) וּבָנָֽיו׃ (and his sons).

6  וּמִן־ (And) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) זֶ֖רַח (of Zerah):

יְעוּאֵ֑ל (Jeuel) וַאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם (and their brothers), שֵׁשׁ־ (six) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) וְתִשְׁעִֽים׃ (and ninety).

7  וּמִן־ (And) בְּנֵ֖י (of the sons) בִּנְיָמִ֑ן (of Benjamin):

סַלּוּא֙ (Sallu) בֶּן־ (son) מְשֻׁלָּ֔ם (of Meshullam), בֶּן־ (son) הוֹדַוְיָ֖ה (of Hodaviah), בֶּן־ (son) הַסְּנֻאָֽה׃ (of Senuah);

8  וְיִבְנְיָה֙ (and Ibneiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְרֹחָ֔ם (of Jeroham);

וְאֵלָ֥ה (and Elah) בֶן־ (son) עֻזִּ֖י (of Uzzi), בֶּן־ (son) מִכְרִ֑י (of Michri);

וּמְשֻׁלָּם֙ (and Meshullam) בֶּן־ (son) שְׁפַטְיָ֔ה (of Shephatiah), בֶּן־ (son) רְעוּאֵ֖ל (of Reuel), בֶּן־ (son) יִבְנִיָּֽה׃ (of Ibnijah);

9  וַאֲחֵיהֶם֙ (and their brothers) לְתֹ֣לְדוֹתָ֔ם (according to their generations)— תְּשַׁ֥ע (nine) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֣ים (and fifty) וְשִׁשָּׁ֑ה (and six). כָּל־ (All) אֵ֣לֶּה (these) אֲנָשִׁ֔ים (men) רָאשֵׁ֥י (were heads) אָב֖וֹת (of fathers) לְבֵ֥ית (according to the house) אֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ס (of their fathers).

10  וּמִן־ (And) הַֽכֹּהֲנִ֑ים (of the priests):

יְדַֽעְיָ֥ה (Jedaiah), וִיהוֹיָרִ֖יב (and Jehoiarib), וְיָכִֽין׃ (and Jachin);

11  וַעֲזַרְיָ֨ה (and Azariah) בֶן־ (son) חִלְקִיָּ֜ה (of Hilkiah), בֶּן־ (son) מְשֻׁלָּ֣ם (of Meshullam), בֶּן־ (son) צָד֗וֹק (of Zadok), בֶּן־ (son) מְרָיוֹת֙ (of Meraioth), בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיט֔וּב (of Ahitub), נְגִ֖יד (leader) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס (of God);

12  וַעֲדָיָה֙ (and Adaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְרֹחָ֔ם (of Jeroham), בֶּן־ (son) פַּשְׁח֖וּר (of Pashhur), בֶּן־ (son) מַלְכִּיָּ֑ה (of Malchijah);

וּמַעְשַׂ֨י (and Maasai) בֶּן־ (son) עֲדִיאֵ֧ל (of Adiel), בֶּן־ (son) יַחְזֵ֛רָה (of Jahzerah), בֶּן־ (son) מְשֻׁלָּ֥ם (of Meshullam), בֶּן־ (son) מְשִׁלֵּמִ֖ית (of Meshillemoth), בֶּן־ (son) אִמֵּֽר׃ (of Immer);

13  וַאֲחֵיהֶ֗ם (and their brothers), רָאשִׁים֙ (heads) לְבֵ֣ית (of the house) אֲבוֹתָ֔ם (of their fathers), אֶ֕לֶף (a thousand) וּשְׁבַ֥ע (and seven) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) וְשִׁשִּׁ֑ים (and sixty) גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי (mighty) חֵ֔יל (of valor) מְלֶ֖אכֶת (for the work) עֲבוֹדַ֥ת (of the service) בֵּית־ (of the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God).

14  וּמִֽן־ (And) הַלְוִיִּ֑ם (of the Levites):

שְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה (Shemaiah) בֶן־ (son) חַשּׁ֛וּב (of Hasshub), בֶּן־ (son) עַזְרִיקָ֥ם (of Azrikam), בֶּן־ (son) חֲשַׁבְיָ֖ה (of Hashabiah), מִן־ (of) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) מְרָרִֽי׃ (of Merari);

15  וּבַקְבַּקַּ֥ר (and Bakbakkar), חֶ֖רֶשׁ (Heresh), וְגָלָ֑ל (and Galal), וּמַתַּנְיָה֙ (and Mattaniah) בֶּן־ (son) מִיכָ֔א (of Micha), בֶּן־ (son) זִכְרִ֖י (of Zichri), בֶּן־ (son) אָסָֽף׃ (of Asaph);

16  וְעֹבַדְיָה֙ (and Obadiah) בֶּֽן־ (son) שְׁמַֽעְיָ֔ה (of Shemaiah), בֶּן־ (son) גָּלָ֖ל (of Galal), בֶּן־ (son) יְדוּת֑וּן (of Jeduthun);

וּבֶרֶכְיָ֤ה (and Berechiah) בֶן־ (son) אָסָא֙ (of Asa), בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְקָנָ֔ה (of Elkanah), הַיּוֹשֵׁ֖ב (who dwelt) בְּחַצְרֵ֥י (in the villages) נְטוֹפָתִֽי׃ (of the Netophathite).

17  וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִים֙ (And the gatekeepers):

שַׁלּ֣וּם (Shallum), וְעַקּ֔וּב (and Akkub), וְטַלְמֹ֖ן (and Talmon), וַאֲחִימָ֑ן (and Ahiman), וַאֲחִיהֶ֥ם (and their brothers).

שַׁלּ֖וּם (Shallum was) הָרֹֽאשׁ׃ (the chief); 18  וְֽעַד־ (and) הֵ֔נָּה (until then) בְּשַׁ֥עַר (at Gate) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the King) מִזְרָ֑חָה (on the east) הֵ֚מָּה (they had been) הַשֹּׁ֣עֲרִ֔ים (the gatekeepers) לְמַחֲנ֖וֹת (for the camps) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) לֵוִֽי׃ (of Levi). 19  וְשַׁלּ֣וּם (And Shallum) בֶּן־ (son) ק֠וֹרֵא (of Kore), בֶּן־ (son) אֶבְיָסָ֨ף (of Ebiasaph), בֶּן־ (son) קֹ֜רַח (of Korah), וְֽאֶחָ֧יו (and his brothers) לְבֵית־ (from the house) אָבִ֣יו (of his father), הַקָּרְחִ֗ים (the Korahites) עַ֚ל (in charge) מְלֶ֣אכֶת (of the work) הָעֲבוֹדָ֔ה (of the service), שֹׁמְרֵ֥י (keepers) הַסִּפִּ֖ים (of the thresholds) לָאֹ֑הֶל (of the tabernacle)— וַאֲבֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ (and their fathers) עַל־ (were over) מַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), שֹׁמְרֵ֖י (keepers) הַמָּבֽוֹא׃ (of the entrance).

20  וּפִֽינְחָ֣ס (And Phinehas) בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְעָזָ֗ר (of Eleazar) נָגִ֨יד (the officer) הָיָ֧ה (had been) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (over them) לְפָנִ֖ים (formerly); יְהוָ֥ה׀ (YHWH was) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

21  זְכַרְיָה֙ (ZEchariah) בֶּ֣ן (son) מְשֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֔ה (of Meshelemiah) שֹׁעֵ֥ר (was keeper) פֶּ֖תַח (of the door) לְאֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting).

22  כֻּלָּ֤ם (All those) הַבְּרוּרִים֙ (chosen) לְשֹׁעֲרִ֣ים (for gatekeepers) בַּסִּפִּ֔ים (at the thresholds) מָאתַ֖יִם (were two hundred) וּשְׁנֵ֣ים (and two) עָשָׂ֑ר (and ten). הֵ֤מָּה (They) בְחַצְרֵיהֶם֙ (in their villages) הִתְיַחְשָׂ֔ם (were reckoned)— הֵ֣מָּה (them) יִסַּ֥ד (had appointed) דָּוִ֛יד (David) וּשְׁמוּאֵ֥ל (and Samuel) הָרֹאֶ֖ה (the seer) בֶּאֱמוּנָתָֽם׃ (to their trusted office).

23  וְהֵ֨ם (And they) וּבְנֵיהֶ֜ם (and their children) עַל־ (were over) הַשְּׁעָרִ֧ים (the gates) לְבֵית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH), לְבֵ֥ית־ (even of the house) הָאֹ֖הֶל (of the tabernacle), לְמִשְׁמָרֽוֹת׃ (by watches). 24  לְאַרְבַּ֣ע (On the four) רוּח֔וֹת (sides) יִהְי֖וּ (were) הַשֹּׁעֲרִ֑ים (the gatekeepers): מִזְרָ֥ח (The east), יָ֖מָּה (west), צָפ֥וֹנָה (north), וָנֶֽגְבָּה׃ (and south). 25  וַאֲחֵיהֶ֨ם (And their brothers) בְּחַצְרֵיהֶ֜ם (in their villages) לָב֨וֹא (were to come in) לְשִׁבְעַ֧ת (for seven) הַיָּמִ֛ים (days) מֵעֵ֥ת (from time) אֶל־ (to) עֵ֖ת (time) עִם־ (with) אֵֽלֶּה׃ (these). 26  כִּ֣י (For) בֶאֱמוּנָ֞ה (in office) הֵ֗מָּה (were) אַרְבַּ֙עַת֙ (four) גִּבֹּרֵ֣י (chief) הַשֹּׁעֲרִ֔ים (gatekeepers), הֵ֖ם (they) הַלְוִיִּ֑ם (Levites), וְהָיוּ֙ (and they were) עַל־ (over) הַלְּשָׁכ֔וֹת (the chambers) וְעַ֥ל (and over) הָאֹצְר֖וֹת (the treasuries) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God). 27  וּסְבִיב֥וֹת (And around) בֵּית־ (the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) יָלִ֑ינוּ (they lodged), כִּֽי־ (because) עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם (on them) מִשְׁמֶ֔רֶת (was the watch). וְהֵ֥ם (And they) עַל־ (were over) הַמַּפְתֵּ֖חַ (the opening), וְלַבֹּ֥קֶר (and morning) לַבֹּֽקֶר׃ (by morning).

28  וּמֵהֶ֖ם (And some of them) עַל־ (were in charge) כְּלֵ֣י (of vessels) הָעֲבוֹדָ֑ה (of the service), כִּֽי־ (for) בְמִסְפָּ֣ר (by number) יְבִיא֔וּם (they brought them in) וּבְמִסְפָּ֖ר (and by number) יוֹצִיאֽוּם׃ (they took them out). 29  וּמֵהֶ֗ם (And some of them) מְמֻנִּים֙ (were appointed) עַל־ (over) הַכֵּלִ֔ים (the vessels) וְעַ֖ל (and over) כָּל־ (all) כְּלֵ֣י (the vessels) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (of the sanctuary), וְעַל־ (and over) הַסֹּ֙לֶת֙ (the fine flour), וְהַיַּ֣יִן (and the wine), וְהַשֶּׁ֔מֶן (and the oil), וְהַלְּבוֹנָ֖ה (and the frankincense), וְהַבְּשָׂמִֽים׃ (and the spices). 30  וּמִן־ (And some) בְּנֵי֙ (of the sons) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (of the priests) רֹקְחֵ֥י (were mixing) הַמִּרְקַ֖חַת (the ointment) לַבְּשָׂמִֽים׃ (of the spices).

31  וּמַתִּתְיָה֙ (And Mattithiah) מִן־ (of) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites) ה֥וּא (he) הַבְּכ֖וֹר (the firstborn) לְשַׁלֻּ֣ם (of Shallum) הַקָּרְחִ֑י (the Korahite)) בֶּאֱמוּנָ֕ה (was entrusted) עַ֖ל (over) מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (the work) הַחֲבִתִּֽים׃ (of the flat cakes). 32  וּמִן־ (And some) בְּנֵ֧י (of the sons) הַקְּהָתִ֛י (of the Kohathites), מִן־ (from) אֲחֵיהֶ֖ם (their brothers), עַל־ (were over) לֶ֣חֶם (the bread) הַֽמַּעֲרָ֑כֶת (of the arrangement), לְהָכִ֖ין (to prepare it) שַׁבַּ֥ת (Sabbath) שַׁבָּֽת׃ס (by Sabbath).

33  וְאֵ֣לֶּה (And these) הַ֠מְשֹׁרְרִים (the singers), רָאשֵׁ֨י (the heads) אָב֧וֹת (of fathers) לַלְוִיִּ֛ם (of the Levites) בַּלְּשָׁכֹ֖ת (in the chambers), פְּטִירִים (were free), כִּֽי־ (for) יוֹמָ֥ם (by day) וָלַ֛יְלָה (and by night) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (they were over them) בַּמְּלָאכָֽה׃ (in the work). 34  אֵלֶּה֩ (These) רָאשֵׁ֨י (the heads) הָאָב֧וֹת (of the fathers) לַלְוִיִּ֛ם (of the Levites) לְתֹלְדוֹתָ֖ם (throughout their generations) רָאשִׁ֑ים (were heads); אֵ֖לֶּה (these) יָשְׁב֥וּ (dwelt) בִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ (in Jerusalem).

35  וּבְגִבְע֛וֹן (And at Gibeon) יָשְׁב֥וּ (dwelt) אֲבִֽי־ (the father) גִבְע֖וֹן (of Gibeon), יְעוּאֵל (Jeiel), וְשֵׁ֥ם (and the name) אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ (of his wife) מַעֲכָֽה׃ (was Maacah),

36  וּבְנ֥וֹ (and His son) הַבְּכ֖וֹר (the firstborn) עַבְדּ֑וֹן (was Abdon), וְצ֣וּר (and Zur), וְקִ֔ישׁ (and Kish), וּבַ֥עַל (and Baal), וְנֵ֖ר (and Ner), וְנָדָֽב׃ (and Nadab), 37  וּגְד֣וֹר (and Gedor), וְאַחְי֔וֹ (and Ahio), וּזְכַרְיָ֖ה (and Zechariah), וּמִקְלֽוֹת׃ (and Mikloth).

38  וּמִקְל֖וֹת (And Mikloth) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) שִׁמְאָ֑ם (Shimeam). וְאַף־ (And also) הֵ֗ם (they) נֶ֧גֶד (alongside) אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם (their brothers) יָשְׁב֥וּ (dwelt) בִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem) עִם־ (with) אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃ס (their brothers).

39  וְנֵר֙ (And Ner) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) קִ֔ישׁ (Kish); וְקִ֖ישׁ (and Kish) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) שָׁא֑וּל (Saul); וְשָׁא֗וּל (and Saul) הוֹלִ֤יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (Jonathan), וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכִּי־ (Malchi-) שׁ֔וּעַ (shua), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲבִינָדָ֖ב (Abinadab), וְאֶת־ (and) אֶשְׁבָּֽעַל׃ (Esh-baal).

40  וּבֶן־ (And a son) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (of Jonathan)

מְרִ֣יב (Merib-): בָּ֑עַל (Baal), וּמְרִי־ (and Merib-) בַ֖עַל (baal) הוֹלִ֥יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) מִיכָֽה׃ (Micah).

41  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) מִיכָ֑ה (of Micah):

פִּית֥וֹן (Pithon), וָמֶ֖לֶךְ (and Melech), וְתַחְרֵֽעַ׃ (and Tahrea).

42  וְאָחָז֙ (And Ahaz) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יַעְרָ֔ה (Jarah); וְיַעְרָ֗ה (and Jarah) הוֹלִ֛יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) עָלֶ֥מֶת (Alemeth), וְאֶת־ (and) עַזְמָ֖וֶת (Azmaveth), וְאֶת־ (and) זִמְרִ֑י (Zimri); וְזִמְרִ֖י (and Zimri) הוֹלִ֥יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) מוֹצָֽא׃ (Moza); 43  וּמוֹצָ֖א (and Moza) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) בִּנְעָ֑א (Binea); וּרְפָיָ֥ה (and Rephaiah) בְנ֛וֹ (his son), אֶלְעָשָׂ֥ה (Eleasah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son), אָצֵ֥ל (Azel) בְּנֽוֹ׃ (his son).

44  וּלְאָצֵל֮ (And unto Azel) שִׁשָּׁ֣ה (were six) בָנִים֒ (sons), וְאֵ֣לֶּה (and these) שְׁמוֹתָ֗ם (their names):

עַזְרִיקָ֥ם׀ (Azrikam), בֹּ֙כְרוּ֙ (Bocheru), וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל (and Ishmael), וּשְׁעַרְיָ֔ה (and Sheariah), וְעֹבַדְיָ֖ה (and Obadiah), וְחָנָ֑ן (and Hanan). אֵ֖לֶּה (These were) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) אָצַֽל׃פ (of Azel).
