The Descendants of Reuben

1  וּבְנֵ֨י (And the sons) רְאוּבֵ֥ן (of Reuben) בְּכֽוֹר־ (the firstborn) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (of Israel)— כִּ֣י (for) ה֣וּא (he was) הַבְּכוֹר֒ (the firstborn), וּֽבְחַלְּלוֹ֙ (and because he defiled) יְצוּעֵ֣י (the bed) אָבִ֔יו (of his father), נִתְּנָה֙ (was given) בְּכֹ֣רָת֔וֹ (his birthright) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) בֶּן־ (son) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וְלֹ֥א (and not) לְהִתְיַחֵ֖שׂ (he is reckoned) לַבְּכֹרָֽה׃ (according to birthright). 2  כִּ֤י (Yet) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) גָּבַ֣ר (prevailed) בְּאֶחָ֔יו (over his brother) וּלְנָגִ֖יד (and a leader) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (was from him), וְהַבְּכֹרָ֖ה (and the birthright was) לְיוֹסֵֽף׃ס (to Joseph). 3  בְּנֵ֥י (The sons) רְאוּבֵ֖ן (of Reuben), בְּכ֣וֹר (the firstborn) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel):

חֲנ֥וֹךְ (Hanoch), וּפַלּ֖וּא (and Pallu), חֶצְר֥וֹן (Hezron), וְכַרְמִֽי׃ (and Carmi).

4  בְּנֵ֖י (The sons) יוֹאֵ֑ל (of Joel):

שְׁמַֽעְיָ֥ה (Shemaiah) בְנ֛וֹ (his son), גּ֥וֹג (Gog) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son), שִׁמְעִ֥י (Shimei) בְנֽוֹ׃ (his son), 5  מִיכָ֥ה (Micah) בְנ֛וֹ (his son), רְאָיָ֥ה (Reaiah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son), בַּ֥עַל (Baal) בְּנֽוֹ׃ (his son), 6  בְּאֵרָ֣ה (and Beerah) בְנ֔וֹ (his son), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) הֶגְלָ֔ה (removed) תִּלְּגַ֥ת (Tiglath-) פִּלְנְאֶ֖סֶר (pilneser) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אַשֻּׁ֑ר (of Assyria)

ה֥וּא (He was) נָשִׂ֖יא (leader) לָרֽאוּבֵנִֽי׃ (of the Reubenite). 7  וְאֶחָיו֙ (And his brothers) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔יו (by their clans) בְּהִתְיַחֵ֖שׂ (reckoned) לְתֹלְדוֹתָ֑ם (to their generations):

הָרֹ֥אשׁ (The chief) יְעִיאֵ֖ל (Jeiel), וּזְכַרְיָֽהוּ׃ (and Zechariah), 8  וּבֶ֙לַע֙ (and Bela) בֶּן־ (son) עָזָ֔ז (of Azaz), בֶּן־ (son) שֶׁ֖מַע (of Shema), בֶּן־ (son) יוֹאֵ֑ל (of Joel). ה֚וּא (He) יוֹשֵׁ֣ב (dwelt) בַּעֲרֹעֵ֔ר (in Aroer) וְעַד־ (and as far as) נְב֖וֹ (Nebo) וּבַ֥עַל (and Baal-) מְעֽוֹן׃ (meon). 9  וְלַמִּזְרָ֗ח (And in the east) יָשַׁב֙ (they settled) עַד־ (as far as) לְב֣וֹא (the entering in) מִדְבָּ֔רָה (of the wilderness), לְמִן־ (even from) הַנָּהָ֖ר (of the River) פְּרָ֑ת (Euphrates), כִּ֧י (because) מִקְנֵיהֶ֛ם (their livestock) רָב֖וּ (had multiplied) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) גִּלְעָֽד׃ (of Gilead).

10  וּבִימֵ֣י (And in the days) שָׁא֗וּל (of Saul) עָשׂ֤וּ (they made) מִלְחָמָה֙ (war) עִם־ (with) הַֽהַגְרִאִ֔ים (the Hagrites), וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ (and they fell) בְּיָדָ֑ם (by their hands), וַיֵּשְׁבוּ֙ (and they dwelt) בְּאָ֣הֳלֵיהֶ֔ם (in their tents) עַֽל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) פְּנֵ֖י (the face) מִזְרָ֥ח (of the east) לַגִּלְעָֽד׃פ (of Gilead).

The Descendants of Gad

11  וּבְנֵי־ (And the sons) גָ֣ד (of Gad) לְנֶגְדָּ֗ם (next to them) יָֽשְׁב֛וּ (dwelt) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) הַבָּשָׁ֖ן (of Bashan) עַד־ (as far as) סַלְכָֽה׃ (Salcah).

12  יוֹאֵ֣ל (Joel was) הָרֹ֔אשׁ (the chief), וְשָׁפָ֖ם (and Shapham) הַמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה (the next), וְיַעְנַ֥י (and Jaanai), וְשָׁפָ֖ט (and Shaphat) בַּבָּשָֽׁן׃ (in Bashan).

13  וַאֲחֵיהֶ֞ם (And their brothers) לְבֵ֣ית (of house) אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם (of their fathers were) מִֽיכָאֵ֡ל (Michael), וּמְשֻׁלָּ֡ם (and Meshullam), וְ֠שֶׁבַע (and Sheba), וְיוֹרַ֧י (and Jorai), וְיַעְכָּ֛ן (and Jachan), וְזִ֥יעַ (and Zia), וָעֵ֖בֶר (and Eber)— שִׁבְעָֽה׃ס (seven). 14  אֵ֣לֶּה׀ (These were) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אֲבִיחַ֗יִל (of Abihail) בֶּן־ (son) חוּרִ֡י (of Huri), בֶּן־ (son) יָ֠רוֹחַ (of Jaroah), בֶּן־ (son) גִּלְעָ֧ד (of Gilead), בֶּן־ (son) מִיכָאֵ֛ל (of Michael), בֶּן־ (son) יְשִׁישַׁ֥י (of Jeshishai), בֶּן־ (son) יַחְדּ֖וֹ (of Jahdo), בֶּן־ (son) בּֽוּז׃ (of Bu z). 15  אֲחִי֙ (Ahi) בֶּן־ (son) עַבְדִּיאֵ֣ל (of Abdiel), בֶּן־ (son) גּוּנִ֔י (of Guni), רֹ֖אשׁ (was chief) לְבֵ֥ית (of the house) אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ (of their fathers).

16  וַיֵּֽשְׁב֛וּ (And they dwelt) בַּגִּלְעָ֥ד (in Gilead), בַּבָּשָׁ֖ן (in Bashan), וּבִבְנֹתֶ֑יהָ (and in its villages), וּבְכָֽל־ (and in all) מִגְרְשֵׁ֥י (the pasturelands) שָׁר֖וֹן (of Sharon) עַל־ (on) תּוֹצְאוֹתָֽם׃ (their outskirts). 17  כֻּלָּם֙ (All of them) הִתְיַחְשׂ֔וּ (were reckoned) בִּימֵ֖י (in the days) יוֹתָ֣ם (of Jotham) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah) וּבִימֵ֖י (and in the days) יָרָבְעָ֥ם (of Jeroboam) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).

18  בְּנֵֽי־ (The sons) רְאוּבֵ֨ן (of Reuben), וְגָדִ֜י (and the Gadite), וַחֲצִ֥י (and half) שֵֽׁבֶט־ (the tribe) מְנַשֶּׁה֮ (of Manasseh), מִן־ (of) בְּנֵי־ (sons) חַיִל֒ (of valor), אֲ֠נָשִׁים (men) נֹשְׂאֵ֨י (bearing) מָגֵ֤ן (shield) וְחֶ֙רֶב֙ (and sword), וְדֹ֣רְכֵי (and drawing) קֶ֔שֶׁת (with the bow), וּלְמוּדֵ֖י (and skillful) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (in war)— אַרְבָּעִ֨ים (forty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה (and four) אֶ֛לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁבַע־ (and seven) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) וְשִׁשִּׁ֖ים (and sixty) יֹצְאֵ֥י (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host). 19  וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ (And they made) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (war) עִם־ (with) הַֽהַגְרִיאִ֑ים (the Hagrites), וִיט֥וּר (and Jetur), וְנָפִ֖ישׁ (and Naphish), וְנוֹדָֽב׃ (and Nodab).

20  וַיֵּעָזְר֣וּ (And they were helped) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (against them), וַיִּנָּתְנ֤וּ (and were delivered) בְיָדָם֙ (into their hands) הַֽהַגְרִיאִ֔ים (the Hagrites) וְכֹ֖ל (and all) שֶׁ֣עִמָּהֶ֑ם (who with them), כִּ֠י (for) לֵאלֹהִ֤ים (to God) זָעֲקוּ֙ (they cried out) בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (in the battle), וְנַעְתּ֥וֹר (and He heeded prayer) לָהֶ֖ם (of them) כִּי־ (because) בָ֥טְחוּ (they put their trust) בֽוֹ׃ (in Him). 21  וַיִּשְׁבּ֣וּ (And they took captive) מִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם (their livestock) גְּֽמַלֵּיהֶ֞ם (of their camels) חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (fifty) אֶ֙לֶף֙ (thousand), וְצֹ֗אן (and of their sheep) מָאתַ֤יִם (two hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁים֙ (and fifty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand), וַחֲמוֹרִ֖ים (and of their donkeys) אַלְפָּ֑יִם (two thousand), וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ (and also) אָדָ֖ם (of their men) מֵ֥אָה (a hundred) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand). 22  כִּֽי־ (For) חֲלָלִ֤ים (slain) רַבִּים֙ (many) נָפָ֔לוּ (fell), כִּ֥י (because) מֵהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (the battle was). וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ (And they dwelt) תַחְתֵּיהֶ֖ם (in their place) עַד־ (until) הַגֹּלָֽה׃פ (the exile).

The Half-Tribe of Manasseh

23  וּבְנֵ֗י (And the sons) חֲצִי֙ (of the half-) שֵׁ֣בֶט (tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh) יָשְׁב֖וּ (dwelt) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the land). מִבָּשָׁ֞ן (From Bashan) עַד־ (as far as) בַּ֧עַל (Baal-) חֶרְמ֛וֹן (hermon) וּשְׂנִ֥יר (and Senir), וְהַר־ (and Mount) חֶרְמ֖וֹן (Hermon)) הֵ֥מָּה (they) רָבֽוּ׃ (multiplied). 24  וְאֵ֖לֶּה (And these were) רָאשֵׁ֣י (the heads) בֵית־ (of the house) אֲבוֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers):

וְעֵ֡פֶר (And Epher), וְיִשְׁעִ֡י (and Ishi), וֶאֱלִיאֵ֡ל (and Eliel), וְ֠עַזְרִיאֵל (and Azriel), וְיִרְמְיָ֨ה (and Jeremiah), וְהוֹדַוְיָ֜ה (and Hodaviah), וְיַחְדִּיאֵ֗ל (and Jahdiel).

אֲנָשִׁים֙ (They were men) גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי (of mighty) חַ֔יִל (in valor), אַנְשֵׁ֣י (men) שֵׁמ֔וֹת (of renown), רָאשִׁ֖ים (and heads) לְבֵ֥ית (to the house) אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ (of their fathers). 25  וַיִּֽמְעֲל֔וּ (And they were unfaithful) בֵּאלֹהֵ֖י (to the God) אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (of their fathers) וַיִּזְנ֗וּ (and played the prostitute) אַחֲרֵי֙ (after) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) עַמֵּי־ (of the peoples) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הִשְׁמִ֥יד (had destroyed) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before them).

26  וַיָּעַר֩ (And stirred up) אֱלֹהֵ֨י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) ר֣וּחַ׀ (the spirit) פּ֣וּל (of Pul) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אַשּׁ֗וּר (of Assyria) וְאֶת־ (that is), ר֙וּחַ֙ (the spirit) תִּלְּגַ֤ת (of Tiglath-) פִּלְנֶ֙סֶר֙ (pilneser) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria)), וַיַּגְלֵם֙ (and he removed them)— לָראוּבֵנִ֣י (the Reubenite), וְלַגָּדִ֔י (and the Gadite), וְלַחֲצִ֖י (and the half-) שֵׁ֣בֶט (tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh), וַ֠יְבִיאֵם (and He took them) לַחְלַ֨ח (to Halah), וְחָב֤וֹר (and Habor), וְהָרָא֙ (and Hara), וּנְהַ֣ר (and the river) גּוֹזָ֔ן (of Gozan), עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃פ (this).
