Jesus, the Christ: Omnipotence of

The omnipotence of Jesus Christ is a central tenet of Christian theology, affirming His divine nature and authority over all creation. This attribute is consistently demonstrated throughout the New Testament, where Jesus is depicted as possessing unlimited power, a characteristic that underscores His identity as the Son of God.

Creation and Sustenance of the Universe

The Gospel of John opens with a profound declaration of Christ's role in creation: "Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made" (John 1:3). This passage affirms that Jesus is not only the agent of creation but also the sustainer of the universe. Colossians 1:16-17 further emphasizes this truth: "For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" .

Miracles as Demonstrations of Omnipotence

The miracles performed by Jesus during His earthly ministry serve as tangible demonstrations of His omnipotence. He exercised authority over nature, as seen when He calmed the storm with a command: "Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was perfectly calm" (Matthew 8:26). His power over physical ailments is evident in numerous healings, such as the restoration of sight to the blind (John 9:6-7) and the cleansing of lepers (Luke 17:12-14).

Jesus also displayed power over life and death, most notably in the raising of Lazarus: "When He had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!' The man who had been dead came out" (John 11:43-44). This miracle not only illustrates His authority over death but also foreshadows His own resurrection, the ultimate demonstration of His power.

Authority Over Spiritual Realms

Christ's omnipotence extends beyond the physical realm to the spiritual. He cast out demons with a word, as recorded in Matthew 8:16: "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick" . His authority over the spiritual forces of darkness is further affirmed in Colossians 2:15, which states, "And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross" .

Forgiveness of Sins

One of the most profound expressions of Jesus' omnipotence is His authority to forgive sins. In Mark 2:5-7, Jesus declares to a paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." This pronouncement astonished the onlookers, who questioned, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?" . Jesus' ability to forgive sins is a direct assertion of His divine authority and power.

The Great Commission

Before His ascension, Jesus affirmed His omnipotence in the Great Commission: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me" (Matthew 28:18). This statement encapsulates His supreme power and serves as the foundation for the mission of the Church, as He commands His disciples to make disciples of all nations.

Throughout the New Testament, the omnipotence of Jesus Christ is a testament to His divine nature and His role as the sovereign Lord over all creation. His power is not only a source of awe but also a foundation for faith, providing assurance of His ability to accomplish His purposes and fulfill His promises.
