1 A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, for the one directing. According to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O YHWH, God of my salvation, by day I have cried out, and in the night before You. O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you. A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. LORD, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you.
2 May my prayer come before Your face; incline Your ear to my cry! Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry! May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.
3 For my soul is filled with troubles, and my life has reached to Sheol. For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death.
4 I am counted with those going down into the Pit; I am like a man with no strength, I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength, I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.
5 among the dead set free, like the slain lying down in the grave, whom You do not remember anymore, even they who are cut off from Your hand. like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.
6 You have set me in the lowest Pit, in darkness in the depths. You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep. You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.
7 Upon me Your wrath has grabbed hold, and with all Your waves You have afflicted. Selah Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.
8 You have put my acquaintances far from me; You have made me loathsome to them; I am shut in, and I cannot go forth. You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape; You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;
9 My eye languishes from this affliction; I have called to You, O YHWH, all the day; I have stretched out to You my hands. my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you. my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.
10 Will You work wonders for the dead? And if departed spirits rise up, do they thank You? Selah Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
11 Can Your loving devotion be recounted in the Grave, or Your faithfulness in Abaddon? Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon? Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction?
12 Will Your wonders be known in the darkness, and Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
13 And I, O YHWH, cry for help to You, and in the morning my prayer comes before You. But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. But I cry to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 Why, O YHWH, do You reject my soul? You hide Your face from me. O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me? Why, LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me?
15 I am afflicted and dying from my youth; I bear Your terrors; I am in despair. Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless. From my youth I have suffered and been close to death; I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
16 Your wrath has passed over me; Your terrors have destroyed me. Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me. Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.
17 They came around me like the waters all the day, they surrounded me altogether. They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together. All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me.
18 You have put far my beloved and friend; my close acquaintance is darkness. You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness. You have taken from me friend and neighbor— darkness is my closest friend.
