1 A PSALM OF ASAPH. Surely God [is] good to Israel, to the clean of heart. And I—as a little thing, || My feet have been turned aside, Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
2 As nothing, my steps have slipped, || For I have been envious of the boastful, But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 I see the peace of the wicked, || That there are no bands at their death, For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 And their might [is] firm. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They are not in the misery of mortals, || And they are not plagued with common men. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore pride has encircled them, || Violence covers them as a dress. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
7 Their eye has come out from fat. The imaginations of the heart transgressed; Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They do corruptly, || And they speak in the wickedness of oppression, || They speak from on high. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 They have set their mouth in the heavens, || And their tongue walks in the earth. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore His people return here, || And waters of fullness are wrung out to them. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
11 And they have said, “How has God known? And is there knowledge in the Most High?” And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”
12 Behold, these [are] the wicked and easy ones of the age, || They have increased strength. Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
13 Only—a vain thing! I have purified my heart, || And I wash my hands in innocence, All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
14 And I am plagued all the day, || And my reproof—every morning. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I have said, “I recount thus,” || Behold, I have deceived a generation of Your sons. If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
16 And I think to know this, || It [is] perverseness in my eyes, But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 Until I come into the sanctuaries of God, || I attend to their latter end. until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
18 Surely You set them in slippery places, || You have caused them to fall to desolations. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How they have become a desolation as in a moment, || They have been ended—consumed from terrors. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 As a dream from awakening, O Lord, || In awaking, You despise their image. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
21 For my heart shows itself violent, || And my reins prick themselves, When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
22 And I am brutish, and do not know. I have been a beast with You. I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
23 And I [am] continually with You, || You have laid hold on my right hand. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
24 You lead me with Your counsel, || And after, receive me [to] glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom do I have in the heavens? And none have I desired in earth [besides] You. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart have been consumed, || God [is] the rock of my heart and my portion for all time. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 For behold, those far from You perish, || You have cut off everyone, || Who is going whoring from You. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 And [the] nearness of God to me [is] good, || I have placed my refuge in Lord YHWH, || To recount all Your works! But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
