1 {A Psalm of Asaph.} Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are of a pure heart. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone, my steps had well nigh slipped; But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 For I was envious at the arrogant, seeing the prosperity of the wicked. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For they have no pangs in their death, and their body is well nourished; For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They have not the hardships of mankind, neither are they plagued like [other] men: They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore pride encompasseth them as a neck-chain, violence covereth them [as] a garment; Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
7 Their eyes stand out from fatness, they exceed the imaginations of their heart: Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They mock and speak wickedly of oppression, they speak loftily: They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 They set their mouth in the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore his people turn hither, and waters in fulness are wrung out to them. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
11 And they say, How can God know, and is there knowledge in the Most High? And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”
12 Behold, these are the wicked, and they prosper in the world: they heap up riches. Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
13 Truly have I purified my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency: All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
14 For all the day have I been plagued, and chastened every morning. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I said, I will speak thus, behold, I should be faithless to the generation of thy children. If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I thought to be able to know this, it was a grievous task in mine eyes; But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 Until I went into the sanctuaries of God; [then] understood I their end. until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
18 Truly thou settest them in slippery places, thou castest them down in ruins. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How are they suddenly made desolate! they pass away, consumed with terrors. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 As a dream, when one awaketh, wilt thou, Lord, on arising despise their image. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
21 When my heart was in a ferment, and I was pricked in my reins, When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
22 Then I was brutish and knew nothing; I was [as] a beast with thee. I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden my right hand; Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
24 Thou wilt guide me by thy counsel, and after the glory, thou wilt receive me. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in the heavens? and there is none upon earth I desire beside thee. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart faileth: God is the rock of my heart and my portion for ever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 For behold, they that are far from thee shall perish; thou destroyest every one that goeth a whoring from thee. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But as for me, it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord Jehovah, that I may declare all thy works. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
