1 A psalm of Asaph. ”8224; God is indeed good to Israel, to the pure in heart. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
2 But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my steps nearly went astray. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 For I envied the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 They have an easy time until they die, and their bodies are well fed. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They are not in trouble like others; they are not afflicted like most people. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore, pride is their necklace, and violence covers them like a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
7 Their eyes bulge out from fatness; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They mock, and they speak maliciously; they arrogantly threaten oppression. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues strut across the earth. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore his people turn to them and drink in their overflowing words. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
11 The wicked say, “How can God know? Does the Most High know everything? ” And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”
12 Look at them—the wicked! They are always at ease, and they increase their wealth. Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
13 Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing? All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
14 For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I had decided to say these things aloud, I would have betrayed your people. If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand all this, it seemed hopeless But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 until I entered God’s sanctuary. Then I understood their destiny. until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
18 Indeed, you put them in slippery places; you make them fall into ruin. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, you will despise their image. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
21 When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
22 I was stupid and didn’t understand; I was an unthinking animal toward you. I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
23 Yet I am always with you; you hold my right hand. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me up in glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 Those far from you will certainly perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so I can tell about all you do. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
