1 A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those pure of heart. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
2 And as for me, at a little stretching out of my feet, my steps had nearly poured out. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 For I was envious of those boasting when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no pangs until their death, and their body is fat. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They are not in the trouble of mankind, and with men they are not are they plagued. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore pride is their necklace; a garment of violence is a covering for them. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
7 Their eye has bulged out from fat, the imaginations of their heart overflow. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They scoff and speak with malice; from a high place they speak oppression. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 They have set their mouth in the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore his people turn here, and waters of fullness are wrung out for them. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
11 And they say, “How can God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?” And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”
12 Behold, these are the wicked, and at ease always, they have increased in wealth. Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
13 Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and I have washed my hands in innocence. All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
14 For I have been stricken all the day, and chastened in the morning. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I had said, “I will speak like this,” behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your sons. If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
16 And I thought to know this—it was toil in my eyes— But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 until I came to the sanctuary of God, and discerned their end. until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
18 Surely You set them on slick ground; You make them fall to destruction. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How they have become a desolation in a moment! They are swept away completely by terrors. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 As a dream from awakening, O Lord, in rousing Yourself, You shall despise their image. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
21 For my heart had grown sour, and my kidneys pierce themselves. When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
22 And I was brutish and could not know; I was a beast before You. I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
23 And I am always with You; You hold my right hand. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
24 May You lead me with Your counsel, and afterward You will receive me in glory! You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Who is unto me in the heavens? And besides You I do not take delight on the earth. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may be consumed, the rock of my heart and my portion is God to the age. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 For behold, those far from You will perish. You destroy everyone prostituting himself from You! For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But I—the nearness of God is good for me—I have placed my refuge in the Lord YHWH, to recount all Your works. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
