1 Unto the end, a psalm for David, in an ecstasy. In thee, O Lord, have I hoped, Iet me never be confounded: deliver me in thy justice. In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me! For the director of music. A psalm of David. In you, LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness.
2 Bow down thy ear to me: make haste to deliver me. Be thou unto me a God, a protector, and a house of refuge, to save me. Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.
3 For thou art my strength and my refuge; and for thy name's sake thou wilt lead me, and nourish me. For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
4 Thou wilt bring me out of this snare, which they have hidden for me: for thou art my protector. you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge.
5 Into thy hands I commend my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, the God of truth. Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God. Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, LORD, my faithful God.
6 Thou hast hated them that regard vanities, to no purpose. But I have hoped in the Lord: I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the LORD.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy. For thou best regarded my humility, thou hast saved my soul out of distresses. I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul.
8 And thou hast not shut me up in the hands of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a spacious place. and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place. You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place.
9 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am afflicted: my eye is troubled with wrath, my soul, and my belly: Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also. Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief.
10 For my life is wasted with grief: and my years in sighs. My strength is weakened through poverty and my bones are disturbed. For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak.
11 I am become a reproach among all my enemies, and very much to my neighbours; and a fear to my acquaintance. They that saw me without fled from me. Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach, especially to my neighbors, and an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me. Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me.
12 I am forgotten as one dead from the heart. I am become as a vessel that is destroyed. I have been forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery.
13 For I have heard the blame of many that dwell round about. While they assembled together against me, they consulted to take away my life. For I hear the whispering of many— terror on every side!— as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life. For I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life.
14 But I have put my trust in thee, O Lord: I said: Thou art my God. But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” But I trust in you, LORD; I say, “You are my God.”
15 My lots are in thy hands. Deliver me out of the hands of my enemies; and from them that persecute me. My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.
16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; save me in thy mercy. Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love! Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.
17 Let me not be confounded, O Lord, for I have called upon thee. Let the wicked be ashamed, and be brought down to hell. O LORD, let me not be put to shame, for I call upon you; let the wicked be put to shame; let them go silently to Sheol. Let me not be put to shame, LORD, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and be silent in the realm of the dead.
18 Let deceitful lips be made dumb. Which speak iniquity against the just, with pride and abuse. Let the lying lips be mute, which speak insolently against the righteous in pride and contempt. Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous.
19 O how great is the multitude of thy sweetness, O Lord, which thou hast hidden for them that fear thee! Which thou hast wrought for them that hope in thee, in the sight of the sons of men. Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind! How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.
20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy face, from the disturbance of men. Thou shalt protect them in thy tabernacle from the contradiction of tongues. In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues. In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.
21 Blessed be the Lord, for he hath shewn his wonderful mercy to me in a fortified city. Blessed be the LORD, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city. Praise be to the LORD, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege.
22 But I said in the excess of my mind: I am cast away from before thy eyes. Therefore thou hast heard the voice of my prayer, when I cried to thee. I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from your sight.” But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help. In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.
23 O love the Lord, all ye his saints: for the Lord will require truth, and will repay them abundantly that act proudly. Love the LORD, all you his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride. Love the LORD, all his faithful people! The LORD preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full.
24 Do ye manfully, and let your heart be strengthened, all ye that hope in the Lord. Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD! Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.
