1 To David himself, understanding. Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Of David. A maskil. Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
2 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin, and in whose spirit there is no guile. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.
3 Because I was silent my bones grew old; whilst I cried out all the day long. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: I am turned in my anguish, whilst the thorn is fastened. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.
5 I have acknowledged my sin to thee, and my injustice I have not concealed. I said I will confess against myself my injustice to the Lord: and thou hast forgiven the wickedness of my sin. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.
6 For this shall every one that is holy pray to thee in a seasonable time. And yet in a flood of many waters, they shall not come nigh unto him. Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.
7 Thou art my refuge from the trouble which hath encompassed me: my joy, deliver me from them that surround me. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
8 I will give thee understanding, and I will instruct thee in this way, in which thou shalt go: I will fix my eyes upon thee. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
9 Do not become like the horse and the mule, who have no understanding. With bit and bridle bind fast their jaws, who come not near unto thee. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the scourges of the sinner, but mercy shall encompass him that hopeth in the Lord. Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye just, and glory, all ye right of heart. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!
