1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John his brother, and doth bring them up to a high mount by themselves, And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun, and his garments did become white as the light, And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 and lo, appear to them did Moses and Elijah, talking together with him. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4 And Peter answering said to Jesus, 'Sir, it is good to us to be here; if thou wilt, we may make here three booths -- for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elijah.' And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My Son, -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.' He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
6 And the disciples having heard, did fall upon their face, and were exceedingly afraid, When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
7 and Jesus having come near, touched them, and said, 'Rise, be not afraid,' But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”
8 and having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only. And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 And as they are coming down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, 'Say to no one the vision, till the Son of Man out of the dead may rise.' And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
10 And his disciples questioned him, saying, 'Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?' And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
11 And Jesus answering said to them, 'Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things, He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
12 and I say to you -- Elijah did already come, and they did not know him, but did with him whatever they would, so also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.' But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”
13 Then understood the disciples that concerning John the Baptist he spake to them. Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
14 And when they came unto the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him, And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.
15 and saying, 'Sir, deal kindly with my son, for he is lunatic, and doth suffer miserably, for often he doth fall into the fire, and often into the water, said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
16 and I brought him near to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.' And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17 And Jesus answering said, 'O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;' And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”
18 and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.
19 Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, 'Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?' Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
20 And Jesus said to them, 'Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you, He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
21 and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.'
22 And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men, As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.
23 and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,' and they were exceeding sorry. and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed. They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.
24 And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, 'Your teacher -- doth he not pay the didrachms?' He saith, 'Yes.' When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25 And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, 'What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth -- from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?' He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?” “Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”
26 Peter saith to him, 'From the strangers.' Jesus said to him, 'Then are the sons free; And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. “From others,” Peter answered. “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him.
27 but, that we may not cause them to stumble, having gone to the sea, cast a hook, and the fish that hath come up first take thou up, and having opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater, that having taken, give to them for me and thee.' However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.” “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
