1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed there to teach and to preach in their cities. When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 3 And said to him, Are you he that should come, or do we look for another? and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus answered and said to them, Go and show John again those things which you do hear and see: And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
6 And blessed is he, whoever shall not be offended in me. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went you out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
8 But what went you out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.
9 But what went you out for to see? A prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, which shall prepare your way before you. This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ This is the one about whom it is written: “’I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’
11 Truly I say to you, Among them that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
14 And if you will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
15 He that has ears to hear, let him hear. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Whoever has ears, let them hear.
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like to children sitting in the markets, and calling to their fellows, “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 And saying, We have piped to you, and you have not danced; we have mourned to you, and you have not lamented. “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ “’We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a devil. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a drunkard, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.” The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
21 Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23 And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, shall be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in you, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
24 But I say to you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.” But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes. At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in your sight. yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knows the Son, but the Father; neither knows any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke on you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
