1 And the sons of Israel again did evil in the eyes of YHWH, and Ehud was dead. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD after Ehud died. Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, now that Ehud was dead.
2 And YHWH sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. And the commander of his army was Sisera, and he dwelt in Harosheth-hagoyim. And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim. So the LORD sold them into the hands of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. Sisera, the commander of his army, was based in Harosheth Haggoyim.
3 And the sons of Israel cried out to YHWH, for nine hundred chariots of iron were unto him, and he oppressed the sons of Israel harshly twenty years. Then the people of Israel cried out to the LORD for help, for he had 900 chariots of iron and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years. Because he had nine hundred chariots fitted with iron and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the LORD for help.
4 And Deborah, a woman, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she was judging Israel at that time. Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.
5 And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and between Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim. And the sons of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and called for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh of Naphtali, and said to him, “Has not YHWH, God of Israel, commanded, ‘Go and draw out at Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men of the sons of Naphtali and of the sons of Zebulun, She sent and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali and said to him, “Has not the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you, ‘Go, gather your men at Mount Tabor, taking 10,000 from the people of Naphtali and the people of Zebulun. She sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “The LORD, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor.
7 and I will draw out against you at the River Kishon Sisera, commander of the army of Jabin, and his chariots and his multitude, and I will deliver him into your hand’?” And I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin’s army, to meet you by the river Kishon with his chariots and his troops, and I will give him into your hand’?” I will lead Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and give him into your hands.’”
8 And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” Barak said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.”
9 And she said, “I will surely go with you; only that there will not be glory for you in the journey that you are taking, for into the hand of a woman YHWH will sell Sisera.” And Deborah went and arose with Barak to Kedesh. And she said, “I will surely go with you. Nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. “Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.
10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet, and Deborah went up with him. And Barak called out Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh. And 10,000 men went up at his heels, and Deborah went up with him. There Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali, and ten thousand men went up under his command. Deborah also went up with him.
11 And Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites of the sons of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and he pitched his tent near a great tree in Zaanannim, which is beside Kedesh. Now Heber the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh. Now Heber the Kenite had left the other Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, Moses’ brother-in-law, and pitched his tent by the great tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh.
12 And they reported to Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. When Sisera was told that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, When they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,
13 And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him from Harosheth-hagoyim to the River Kishon. Sisera called out all his chariots, 900 chariots of iron, and all the men who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. Sisera summoned from Harosheth Haggoyim to the Kishon River all his men and his nine hundred chariots fitted with iron.
14 And Deborah said to Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that YHWH has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not YHWH gone out before you?” And Barak went down from Mount Tabor, and ten thousand men following him. And Deborah said to Barak, “Up! For this is the day in which the LORD has given Sisera into your hand. Does not the LORD go out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him. Then Deborah said to Barak, “Go! This is the day the LORD has given Sisera into your hands. Has not the LORD gone ahead of you?” So Barak went down Mount Tabor, with ten thousand men following him.
15 And YHWH routed Sisera, and all the chariots, and all the army, with the mouth of the sword before the face of Barak; and Sisera came down from the chariot and fled on foot. And the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army before Barak by the edge of the sword. And Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. At Barak’s advance, the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and army by the sword, and Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot.
16 And Barak pursued after the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the mouth of the sword; not even one remained. And Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left. Barak pursued the chariots and army as far as Harosheth Haggoyim, and all Sisera’s troops fell by the sword; not a man was left.
17 And Sisera had fled on foot to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and between the house of Heber the Kenite. But Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. Sisera, meanwhile, fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was an alliance between Jabin king of Hazor and the family of Heber the Kenite.
18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me. Fear not.” And he turned aside with her into the tent, and she covered him with a blanket. And Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord; turn aside to me; do not be afraid.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Come, my lord, come right in. Don’t be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.
19 And he said to her, “Give me to drink, please, a little water, for I am thirsty.” And she opened a jug of milk, and gave him a drink, and covered him. And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. “I’m thirsty,” he said. “Please give me some water.” She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up.
20 And he said to her, “Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and inquires of you and says, ‘Is there any man here?’ You shall say, ‘No.’” And he said to her, “Stand at the opening of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’” “Stand in the doorway of the tent,” he told her. “If someone comes by and asks you, ‘Is anyone in there?’ say ‘No.’”
21 And Jael the wife of Heber took a peg of the tent, and she put the hammer in her hand, and she went to him in secrecy and drove the peg into his temple, and it went down into the ground. For he was fast asleep and weary, and he died. But Jael the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died. But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.
22 And behold, Barak pursued Sisera, and Jael came out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you seek.” And he went with her, and there Sisera lay dead, with the peg in his temple. And behold, as Barak was pursuing Sisera, Jael went out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he went in to her tent, and there lay Sisera dead, with the tent peg in his temple. Just then Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. “Come,” she said, “I will show you the man you’re looking for.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead.
23 And God subdued on that day Jabin king of Canaan before the faces of the sons of Israel. So on that day God subdued Jabin the king of Canaan before the people of Israel. On that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan before the Israelites.
24 And the hand of the sons of Israel grew stronger, going on and becoming hard against Jabin king of Canaan, until that they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan. And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan. And the hand of the Israelites pressed harder and harder against Jabin king of Canaan until they destroyed him.
