1 Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary from Magdala went to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb's entrance. Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus loved. 3 So Peter and the other disciple headed for the tomb. So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4 The two were running side by side, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

7 He also saw the cloth that had been on Jesus' head. It wasn't lying with the strips of linen but was rolled up separately. and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
8 Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside. He saw and believed. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9 They didn't know yet what Scripture meant when it said that Jesus had to come back to life. for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
10 So the disciples went back home. Then the disciples went back to their homes. Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
11 Mary, however, stood there and cried as she looked at the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked inside. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12 She saw two angels in white clothes. They were sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying. One angel was where Jesus' head had been, and the other was where his feet had been. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 The angels asked her why she was crying. Mary told them, |They have removed my Lord, and I don't know where they've put him.| They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
14 After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. However, she didn't know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus asked her, |Why are you crying? Who are you looking for?| Mary thought it was the gardener speaking to her. So she said to him, |Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I'll remove him.| Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, |Mary!| Mary turned around and said to him in Hebrew, |Rabboni!| (This word means |teacher.|) Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus told her, |Don't hold on to me. I have not yet gone to the Father. But go to my brothers and sisters and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'| Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary from Magdala went to the disciples and told them, |I have seen the Lord.| She also told them what he had said to her. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
19 That Sunday evening, the disciples were together behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus stood among them and said to them, |Peace be with you!| On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
20 When he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were glad to see the Lord. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. 22 After he had said this, he breathed on the disciples and said, |Receive the Holy Spirit. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 Whenever you forgive sins, they are forgiven. Whenever you don't forgive them, they are not forgiven.| If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
24 Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, who was called Didymus, wasn't with them when Jesus came. Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples told him, |We've seen the Lord.| Thomas told them, |I refuse to believe this unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my fingers into them, and put my hand into his side.| So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 A week later Jesus' disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus stood among them and said, |Peace be with you!| Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
27 Then Jesus said to Thomas, |Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, and believe.| Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas responded to Jesus, |My Lord and my God!| Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to Thomas, |You believe because you've seen me. Blessed are those who haven't seen me but believe.| Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
30 Jesus performed many other miracles that his disciples saw. Those miracles are not written in this book. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
31 But these miracles have been written so that you will believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that you will have life by believing in him. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
