1 |I have told you this to keep you from falling away. “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away.
2 You'll be thrown out of the synagogues. Yes, a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he's serving God. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.
3 They'll do this because they haven't known the Father or me. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
4 But I've told you this, so that when the time comes you'll remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you this in the beginning, because I was still with you.| But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,
5 |But now I am going to the one who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
6 But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your hearts. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.
7 However, I'm telling you the truth. It's for your advantage that I'm going away, because if I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment— And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
9 of sin, because they don't believe in me; concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; about sin, because people do not believe in me;
10 of righteousness, because I'm going to the Father and you will no longer see me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
11 and of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 |I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot bear it now. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
13 Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he'll guide you into all truth. He won't speak on his own accord, but he'll speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
15 All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, 'He will take what is mine and declare it to you.' All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
16 In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again.| “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
17 At this point, some of his disciples asked each other, |What does he mean by telling us, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again,' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?| So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
18 They kept saying, |What is this 'in a little while' that he keeps talking about? We don't know what he means.| So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him a question, so he asked them, |Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again'? Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’?
20 Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you'll cry and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You'll be deeply distressed, but your pain will turn into joy. Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
21 When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her time has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember the agony anymore because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
22 Now you are having pain. But I'll see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
23 On that day, you won't ask me for anything. Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
24 So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.| Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
25 |I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father. “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
26 At that time, you will make your requests in my name, so that I will have no need to ask the Father on your behalf, In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
27 because the Father himself loves you, and because you have loved me and believed that I came from God. for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
28 I left the Father and came into the world. Now I'm leaving the world and going back to the Father.| I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
29 Jesus' disciples said, |Well, now you're speaking plainly and not using figurative language. His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
30 Now we know that you know everything and don't need to have anyone ask you any questions. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God.| Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, |Do you now believe? Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied.
32 Listen, the time is coming, indeed it has already come, when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home, and you will leave me all by myself. Yet I'm not alone, because the Father is with me. Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous—I've overcome the world!| I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
