1 These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.
3 and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
4 But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said [them] unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from [the] beginning, because I was with you. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,
5 But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou? But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.
7 But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe on me; concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; about sin, because people do not believe in me;
10 of righteousness, because I go away to [my] Father, and ye behold me no longer; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
13 But when he is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
14 He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce [it] to you. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
15 All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce [it] to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
16 A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, [because I go away to the Father]. “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
17 [Some] of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father? So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
18 They said therefore, What is this which he says [of] the little while? We do not know [of] what he speaks. So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me? Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’?
20 Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy. Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
21 A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
23 And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
24 Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
25 These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father. “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
26 In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you, In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
27 for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God. for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
28 I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father. I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
29 His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory. His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
30 Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God. Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied.
32 Behold, [the] hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, for the Father is with me. Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
