1 “ I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
2 Every branch not bearing fruit in Me, He takes it away; and every one bearing fruit, He prunes it clean so that it may bear more fruit. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
3 Already you⁺ are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you⁺. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
4 Remain in Me, and I in you⁺. As the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither you⁺, unless you⁺ remain in Me. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 I am the vine; you⁺ are the branches. The one remaining in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit. For apart from Me you⁺ are able to do nothing. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown out like the branch and is dried up; and they gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
7 If you⁺ remain in Me and My words remain in you⁺, you⁺ shall ask whatever you⁺ wish, and to you⁺ it will come to pass. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
8 In this My Father is glorified, that you⁺ should bear much fruit, and you⁺ shall be My disciples. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9 As the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you⁺. Remain in My love. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
10 If you⁺ keep My commandments, you⁺ will abide in My love, as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
11 These things I have spoken to you⁺ so that My joy may be in you⁺ and your⁺ joy may be full. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
12 This is My commandment, that you⁺ should love one another as I have loved you⁺. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
14 You⁺ are My friends if you⁺ do what I command you⁺. You are my friends if you do what I command you. You are my friends if you do what I command.
15 No longer do I call you⁺ servants, because the servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you⁺ friends, because all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you⁺. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
16 You⁺ did not choose Me, but I chose you⁺, and I appointed you⁺ so that you⁺ should go and bear fruit, and that your⁺ fruit should remain, so that whatever you⁺ might ask the Father in My name, He may give you⁺. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
17 These things I command you⁺, that you⁺ love one another. These things I command you, so that you will love one another. This is my command: Love each other.
18 If the world hates you⁺, you⁺ know that it has hated Me before you⁺. “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
19 If you⁺ were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you⁺ are not of the world, but I chose you⁺ out of the world, on account of this, the world hates you⁺. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
20 Remember the word that I said to you⁺: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you⁺; if they kept My word, they will keep yours⁺ also. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
21 But they will do all these things against you⁺ on account of My name, because they do not know the One having sent Me. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 The one hating Me hates My Father also. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.
24 If I had not done among them the works that no other has done, they would not have had sin; but now they have both seen and hated both Me and My Father. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
25 But this is so that the word having been written in their Law may be fulfilled: ‘They hated Me without cause.’ But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’
26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you⁺ from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes forth from the Father, He will testify about Me. “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.
27 And you⁺ also testify, because you⁺ are with Me from the beginning. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
