1 But now, Job, pay attention to my speech, and listen to all my words. “But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. “But now, Job, listen to my words; pay attention to everything I say.
2 I am going to open my mouth; my tongue will form words on my palate. Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words come from my upright heart, and my lips speak with sincerity what they know. My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know.
4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 Refute me if you can. Prepare your case against me; take your stand. Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. Answer me then, if you can; stand up and argue your case before me.
6 I am just like you before God; I was also pinched off from a piece of clay. Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.
7 Fear of me should not terrify you; the pressure I exert against you will be light. Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy on you.
8 Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words: “Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. “But you have said in my hearing— I heard the very words—
9 “I am pure, without transgression; I am clean and have no guilt. You say, ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.
10 But He finds reasons to oppose me; He regards me as His enemy. Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
11 He puts my feet in the stocks; He stands watch over all my paths.” he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.’ He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.’
12 But I tell you that you are wrong in this matter, since God is greater than man. “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. “But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal.
13 Why do you take Him to court for not answering anything a person asks? Why do you contend against him, saying, ‘He will answer none of man’s words’? Why do you complain to him that he responds to no one’s words?
14 For God speaks time and again, but a person may not notice it. For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it.
15 In a dream, a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
16 He uncovers their ears at that time and terrifies them with warnings, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings,
17 in order to turn a person from his actions and suppress his pride. that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride,
18 God spares his soul from the Pit, his life from crossing the river of death. he keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.
19 A person may be disciplined on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones, “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed and with continual strife in his bones, “Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones,
20 so that he detests bread, and his soul despises his favorite food. so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite the choicest food. so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.
21 His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his unseen bones stick out. His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out. Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
22 He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the executioners. His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death. They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
23 If there is an angel on his side, one mediator out of a thousand, to tell a person what is right for him If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him, Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright,
24 and to be gracious to him and say, “Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom,” and he is merciful to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom; and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them—
25 then his flesh will be healthier than in his youth, and he will return to the days of his youthful vigor. let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’; let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’—
26 He will pray to God, and God will delight in him. That man will see His face with a shout of joy, and God will restore his righteousness to him. then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness. then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being.
27 He will look at men and say, “I have sinned and perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved. He sings before men and says: ‘I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved.
28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will continue to see the light.” He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’ God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
29 God certainly does all these things two or three times to a man “Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, “God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times—
30 in order to turn him back from the Pit, so he may shine with the light of life. to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life. to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.
31 Pay attention, Job, and listen to me. Be quiet, and I will speak. Pay attention, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32 But if you have something to say, answer me; speak, for I would like to justify you. If you have any words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to vindicate you.
33 If not, then listen to me; be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom. If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
