1 Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, and hearken to all my words. “But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. “But now, Job, listen to my words; pay attention to everything I say.
2 Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth. Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart: and that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely. My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know.
4 The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty giveth me life. The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 If thou canst, answer thou me; set thy words in order before me, stand forth. Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. Answer me then, if you can; stand up and argue your case before me.
6 Behold, I am toward God even as thou art: I also am formed out of the clay. Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.
7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee. Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy on you.
8 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, “Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. “But you have said in my hearing— I heard the very words—
9 I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me: You say, ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.
10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy; Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
11 He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.’ He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.’
12 Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just; for God is greater than man. “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. “But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal.
13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. Why do you contend against him, saying, ‘He will answer none of man’s words’? Why do you complain to him that he responds to no one’s words?
14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, though man regardeth it not. For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings,
17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man; that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride,
18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. he keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.
19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones: “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed and with continual strife in his bones, “Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones,
20 So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite the choicest food. so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.
21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out. Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, and his life to the destroyers. His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death. They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
23 If there be with him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man what is right for him; If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him, Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright,
24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom. and he is merciful to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom; and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them—
25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child's; he returneth to the days of his youth: let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’; let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’—
26 He prayeth unto God, and he is favourable unto him; so that he seeth his face with joy: and he restoreth unto man his righteousness. then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness. then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being.
27 He singeth before men, and saith, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not: He sings before men and says: ‘I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved.
28 He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit, and my life shall behold the light. He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’ God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
29 Lo, all these things doth God work, twice, yea thrice, with a man, “Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, “God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times—
30 To bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living. to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life. to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.
31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak. Pay attention, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32 If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee. If you have any words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to vindicate you.
33 If not, hearken thou unto me: hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom. If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
