1 Hear therefore, O Job, my speeches, and hearken to all my words. “But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. “But now, Job, listen to my words; pay attention to everything I say.
2 Behold now I have opened my mouth, let my tongue speak within my jaws. Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words are from my upright heart, and my lips shall speak a pure sentence. My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know.
4 The spirit of God made me, and the breath of the Almighty gave me life. The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 If thou canst, answer me, and stand up against my face. Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. Answer me then, if you can; stand up and argue your case before me.
6 Behold God hath made me as well as thee, and of the same clay I also was formed. Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.
7 But yet let not my wonder terrify thee, and let not my eloquence be burdensome to thee. Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy on you.
8 Now thou has said in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words : “Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. “But you have said in my hearing— I heard the very words—
9 I am clean, and without sin : I am unspotted, and there is no iniquity in me. You say, ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.
10 Because he hath found complaints against me, therefore he hath counted me for his enemy. Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
11 He hath put my feet in the stocks, he hath observed all my paths. he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.’ He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.’
12 Now this is the thing in which thou art not justified : I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. “But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal.
13 Dost thou strive against him, because he hath not answered thee to all words? Why do you contend against him, saying, ‘He will answer none of man’s words’? Why do you complain to him that he responds to no one’s words?
14 God speaketh once, and repeateth not the selfsame thing the second time. For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it.
15 By a dream in a vision by night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, and they are sleeping in their beds : In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and teaching instructeth them in what they are to learn. then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings,
17 That he may withdraw a man from the things he is doing, and may deliver him from pride. that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride,
18 Rescuing his soul from corruption : and his life from passing to the sword. he keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.
19 He rebuketh also by sorrow in the bed, and he maketh all his bones to wither. “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed and with continual strife in his bones, “Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones,
20 Bread becometh abominable to him in his life, and to his soul the meat which before he desired. so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite the choicest food. so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.
21 His flesh shall be consumed away, and his bones that were covered shall be made bare. His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out. Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
22 His soul hath drawn near to corruption, and his life to the destroyers. His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death. They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
23 If there shall be an angel speaking for him, one among thousands, to declare man's uprightness, If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him, Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright,
24 He shall have mercy on him, and shall say : Deliver him, that he may not go down to corruption : I have found wherein I may be merciful to him. and he is merciful to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom; and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them—
25 His flesh is consumed with punishment, let him return to the days of his youth. let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’; let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’—
26 He shall pray to God, and he will be gracious to him : and he shall see his face with joy, and he will render to man his justice. then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness. then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being.
27 He shall look upon men, and shall say : I have sinned, and indeed I have offended, and I have not received what I have deserved. He sings before men and says: ‘I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved.
28 He hath delivered his soul from going into destruction, that it may live and see the light. He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’ God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
29 Behold, all these things God worketh three times within every one. “Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, “God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times—
30 That he may withdraw their souls from corruption, and enlighten them with the light of the living. to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life. to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.
31 Attend, Job, and hearken to me : and hold thy peace, whilst I speak. Pay attention, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32 But if thou hast any thing to say, answer me, speak : for I would have thee to appear just. If you have any words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to vindicate you.
33 And if thou have not, hear me : hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom. If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
