1 “ But, please, O Job, hear my speech, and give ear to all my words. “But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. “But now, Job, listen to my words; pay attention to everything I say.
2 Behold now, I open my mouth; my tongue speaks in my palate. Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 From the straightness of my heart are my words, and my lips, being pure, speak knowledge. My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know.
4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of Shaddai gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 If you are able to refute me, arrange it before my face; station yourself. Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. Answer me then, if you can; stand up and argue your case before me.
6 Behold, I am according to your mouth before God; from clay I also have been formed. Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.
7 Behold, my terror should not frighten you; and my hand on you shall not be heavy. Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy on you.
8 Surely you have spoken in my ears, and the sound of the words I have heard. “Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. “But you have said in my hearing— I heard the very words—
9 ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and no iniquity is in me. You say, ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.
10 Behold, He finds occasions against me; He reckons me as an enemy to Him. Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
11 He puts my feet into the shackles; He watches all my paths.’ he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.’ He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.’
12 Behold, in this you are not right; I will answer you, for God is greater than man. “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. “But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal.
13 Why do you contend against Him, for all words He does not answer? Why do you contend against him, saying, ‘He will answer none of man’s words’? Why do you complain to him that he responds to no one’s words?
14 For once God speaks, and twice—one does not perceive it. For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it.
15 In a dream, a vision of the night, in the falling of deep sleep upon men, in slumbers upon a bed, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
16 then He uncovers the ear of men, and with correction He seals them, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings,
17 to turn aside a man from his doing, and to conceal pride from a man. that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride,
18 He holds back his soul from the Pit, and his life from crossing over by a weapon. he keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.
19 And he is churried with pain on his bed, and strife in his bones is continual, “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed and with continual strife in his bones, “Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones,
20 and his life abhors bread, and his soul food of desire. so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite the choicest food. so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.
21 His flesh is consumed from sight, and his bones that were not seen are laid bare. His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out. Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
22 And his soul draws near to the pit, and his life to those causing death. His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death. They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
23 If there is a messenger for him, a mediator, one among a thousand, to declare to man his uprightness, If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him, Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright,
24 and shows him favor and says, ‘Spare him from going down into the Pit; I have found a ransom,’ and he is merciful to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom; and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them—
25 then his flesh is refreshed like a child’s, and he returns to the days of his youth. let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’; let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’—
26 He prays to God, and He shows him favor; and he sees His face with a shout of joy, and He restores to the man His righteousness. then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness. then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being.
27 Then he shall sing before men and say, ‘I have sinned, and have twisted uprightness, and He did not requite it of me. He sings before men and says: ‘I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved.
28 He has ransomed my soul from going down to the Pit, and my life shall look on the light.’ He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’ God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
29 Behold, all these things God does two or three times with a man, “Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, “God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times—
30 to bring back his soul from the Pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living. to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life. to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.
31 Pay attention, O Job; listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. Pay attention, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32 If there are words, answer me; speak, for I delight to prove you right. If you have any words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to vindicate you.
33 If not, then you must listen to me; keep silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
