“Say to your brothers—Ammi, || And to your sisters—Ruhamah. Say to your brothers, “You are my people,” and to your sisters, “You have received mercy.” “Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’ and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’
Plead with your mother—plead || (For she [is] not My wife, and I [am] not her husband), || And she turns her whoredoms from before her, || And her adulteries from between her breasts, “Plead with your mother, plead— for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband— that she put away her whoring from her face, and her adultery from between her breasts; “Rebuke your mother, rebuke her, for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove the adulterous look from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
Lest I strip her naked. And have set her up as [in] the day of her birth, || And have made her as a wilderness, || And have set her as a dry land, || And have put her to death with thirst. lest I strip her naked and make her as in the day she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and make her like a parched land, and kill her with thirst. Otherwise I will strip her naked and make her as bare as on the day she was born; I will make her like a desert, turn her into a parched land, and slay her with thirst.
And her sons I do not pity, || For they [are] sons of whoredoms, Upon her children also I will have no mercy, because they are children of whoredom. I will not show my love to her children, because they are the children of adultery.
For their mother has gone whoring, || Their conceiver has acted shamefully, || For she has said, I go after my lovers, || Those giving my bread and my water, || My wool and my flax, my oil and my drink. For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’ Their mother has been unfaithful and has conceived them in disgrace. She said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my food and my water, my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’
Therefore, behold, I am hedging up your way with thorns, || And I have made a wall for her, || And her paths she does not find. Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths. Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes; I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way.
And she has pursued her lovers, || And she does not overtake them, || And has sought them, and does not find [them], || And she has said: I go, and I return to my first husband, || For—better to me then than now. She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.’ She will chase after her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now.’
And she did not know that I had given to her || The grain, and the new wine, and the oil. Indeed, I multiplied silver to her, || And the gold they prepared for Ba‘al. And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal. She has not acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who lavished on her the silver and gold— which they used for Baal.
Therefore I return, || And I have taken My grain in its season, || And My new wine in its appointed time, || And I have taken away My wool and My flax, covering her nakedness. Therefore I will take back my grain in its time, and my wine in its season, and I will take away my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness. “Therefore I will take away my grain when it ripens, and my new wine when it is ready. I will take back my wool and my linen, intended to cover her naked body.
And now I reveal her dishonor before the eyes of her lovers, || And none deliver her out of My hand. Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall rescue her out of my hand. So now I will expose her lewdness before the eyes of her lovers; no one will take her out of my hands.
And I have caused all her joy to cease, || Her festival, her new moon, and her Sabbath, || Even all her appointed times, And I will put an end to all her mirth, her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her appointed feasts. I will stop all her celebrations: her yearly festivals, her New Moons, her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals.
And made desolate her vine and her fig tree, || Of which she said, They [are] a wage to me, || That my lovers have given to me, || And I have made them for a forest, || And a beast of the field has consumed them. And I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, ‘These are my wages, which my lovers have given me.’ I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall devour them. I will ruin her vines and her fig trees, which she said were her pay from her lovers; I will make them a thicket, and wild animals will devour them.
And I have charged on her the days of the Ba‘alim, || To whom she makes incense, || And puts on her ring and her ornament, || And goes after her lovers, || And forgot Me,” a declaration of YHWH. And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals when she burned offerings to them and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the LORD. I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals; she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, but me she forgot,” declares the LORD.
“Therefore, behold, I am enticing her, || And have caused her to go to the wilderness, || And I have spoken to her heart, “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. “Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.
And given to her her vineyards from there, || And the Valley of Achor for an opening of hope, || And she has responded there as in the days of her youth, || And as in the day of her coming up out of the land of Egypt. And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt.
And it has come to pass in that day,” || A declaration of YHWH, || “You call Me: My husband, || And do not call Me anymore: My lord. “And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ “In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call me ‘my husband’; you will no longer call me ‘my master.’
And I have turned aside the names of the lords from her mouth, || And they are not remembered anymore by their name. For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips; no longer will their names be invoked.
And I have made a covenant for them in that day, || With the beast of the field, || And with the bird of the heavens, || And the creeping thing of the ground, || And bow, and sword, and war I break from off the land, || And have caused them to lie down confidently. And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety.
And I have betrothed you to Me for all time, || And betrothed you to Me in righteousness, || And in judgment, and kindness, and mercies, And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion.
And betrothed you to Me in faithfulness, || And you have known YHWH. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD. I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the LORD.
And it has come to pass in that day, I answer,” || A declaration of YHWH, || “I answer the heavens, and they answer the earth. “And in that day I will answer, declares the LORD, I will answer the heavens, and they shall answer the earth, “In that day I will respond,” declares the LORD— “I will respond to the skies, and they will respond to the earth;
And the earth answers the grain, || And the new wine, and the oil, || And they answer Jezreel. and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil, and they shall answer Jezreel, and the earth will respond to the grain, the new wine and the olive oil, and they will respond to Jezreel.
And I have sowed her to Me in the land, || And I have pitied Lo-Ruhamah, || And I have said to Lo-Ammi, You [are] My people, || And he says, My God!” and I will sow her for myself in the land. And I will have mercy on No Mercy, and I will say to Not My People, ‘You are my people’; and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’” I will plant her for myself in the land; I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.’ I will say to those called ‘Not my people,’ ‘You are my people’; and they will say, ‘You are my God.’”
