“Because Israel [is] a youth, and I love him, || Out of Egypt I have called for My Son. When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
They have called to them correctly, || They have gone from before them, || They sacrifice to lords, || And make incense to carved images. The more they were called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols. But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.
And I have caused Ephraim to go on foot, || Taking them by their arms, || And they have not known that I strengthened them. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them. It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them.
I draw them with cords of man, || With thick cords of love, || And I am to them as a raiser up of a yoke on their jaws, || And I incline to him—I feed [him]. I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.
He does not return to the land of Egypt, || And Asshur—he [is] his king, || For they have refused to return. They shall not return to the land of Egypt, but Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. “Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent?
The sword has been grievous in his cities, || And it has ended his bars, and consumed—from their own counsels. The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them because of their own counsels. A sword will flash in their cities; it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans.
And My people are hanging in suspense about My returning, || And to the Most High they call, || Together they do not exalt. My people are bent on turning away from me, and though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all. My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them.
How do I give you up, O Ephraim? Do I deliver you up, O Israel? How do I make you as Admah? Do I set you as Zeboim? My heart is turned in Me, || My sympathy has been kindled together. How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. “How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused.
I do not do the fierceness of My anger, || I do not turn back to destroy Ephraim, || For I [am] God, and not a man—The Holy One in your midst, and I do not enter in enmity. I will not execute my burning anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man— the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities.
They go after YHWH—He roars as a lion, || When He roars, then the sons from the west tremble. They shall go after the LORD; he will roar like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west; They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.
They tremble as a sparrow out of Egypt, || And as a dove out of the land of Asshur, || And I have caused them to dwell in their own houses,” || A declaration of YHWH. they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria, and I will return them to their homes, declares the LORD. They will come from Egypt, trembling like sparrows, from Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their homes,” declares the LORD.
“Ephraim has surrounded Me with feigning, || And the house of Israel with deceit. And Judah is again ruling with God, || And [is] faithful with the Holy Ones!” Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One. Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, Israel with deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy One.
