1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield; your reward will be very great. After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
2 But Abram said, “Lord GOD, what can you give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? ” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” But Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
3 Abram continued, “Look, you have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house will be my heir.” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
4 Now the word of the LORD came to him: “This one will not be your heir; instead, one who comes from your own body will be your heir.” And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”
5 He took him outside and said, “Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “Your offspring will be that numerous.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
7 He also said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” And he said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” He also said to him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.”
8 But he said, “Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it? ” But he said, “O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” But Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?”
9 He said to him, “Bring me a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” So the LORD said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”
10 So he brought all these to him, cut them in half, and laid the pieces opposite each other, but he did not cut the birds in half. And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half. Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.
11 Birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, a deep sleep came over Abram, and suddenly great terror and darkness descended on him. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
13 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be resident aliens for four hundred years in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. Then the LORD said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.
14 However, I will judge the nation they serve, and afterward they will go out with many possessions. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
15 But you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.
16 In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the divided animals. When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I give this land to your offspring, from the Brook of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates River: On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates—
19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
20 Hethites, Perizzites, Rephaim, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
