This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you | This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, | Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. |
that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, | that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, | I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles. |
knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts | knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. | Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. |
and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” | They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” | They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” |
For they willfully forget that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water by the word of God, | For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, | But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. |
by which means the world that existed then, being overflowed with water, perished. | and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. | By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. |
But the heavens that exist now and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. | But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. | By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. |
But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. |
The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. | The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. |
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat; and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. | But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. | But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. |
Therefore, since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness, | Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, | Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives |
looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? | waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! | as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. |
But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. | But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. | But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. |
Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight. | Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. | So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. |
Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you, | And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, | Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. |
as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. | as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. | He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. |
You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness. | You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. | Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. |
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. | But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. | But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. |
