And the boy Samuel ministered to YHWH before the face of Eli. And the word of YHWH was rare in those days; there was no vision broken forth. Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD in the presence of Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.
And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place and his eyes had begun to be dim, that he could not see, At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.
and the lamp of God was not yet extinguished, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of YHWH where there was the ark of God, The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was.
that YHWH called to Samuel. And he answered, “Behold.” Then the LORD called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.”
And he ran to Eli and said, “Behold, for you have called me.” And he said, “I did not call. Turn back, lie down.” And he went and lay down. and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And YHWH added to call again, “Samuel!” And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Behold, for you called me.” And He answered, “I did not call, my son. Turn back, lie down.” And the LORD called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”
And Samuel did not know YHWH, and the word of YHWH was not yet revealed to him. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
And YHWH again called Samuel the third time, and he arose and went to Eli and said, “Behold, for you called me.” And Eli perceived that YHWH had called the boy. And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. A third time the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy.
And Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and it shall come to pass, if He calls to you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, YHWH, for Your servant is listening.’” And Samuel went and lay down in his place. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And YHWH came and stationed Himself and called as at other times, “Samuel, Samuel.” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
And YHWH said to Samuel, “Behold, I am doing a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. Then the LORD said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.
In that day I will establish against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end.
For I have told him that I will judge his house even to forever for the iniquity that he knows, because his sons blasphemed God, and he did not restrain them. And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them.
And now I have sworn to the house of Eli, ‘The iniquity of the house of Eli shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or by offering even to forever.’” Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.” Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
And Samuel lay down until the morning, and he opened the doors of the house of YHWH. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,
And Eli called Samuel, and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he answered, “Behold.” But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.”
And he said, “What is the word that He has spoken to you? Please do not hide it from me. Thus may God do to you, and even more, if you hide from me anything of all the words that He has spoken to you.” And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.”
And Samuel told to him all the words, and he hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is YHWH. Let Him do what is good in His eyes.” So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him.” So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.”
And Samuel grew, and YHWH was with him and did not let any of his words fall to the ground. And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.
And all Israel knew, from Dan and to Beersheba, that Samuel was established as a prophet of YHWH. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD.
And YHWH again appeared in Shiloh, for YHWH revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of YHWH. And the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD. The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
