1 Brothers and sisters, I don't want there to be any misunderstanding concerning spiritual gifts. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
2 You know that when you were unbelievers, every time you were led to worship false gods you were worshiping gods who couldn't even speak. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by God's Spirit says, |Jesus is cursed.| No one can say, |Jesus is Lord,| except by the Holy Spirit. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
5 There are different ways of serving, and yet the same Lord is served. and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
6 There are different types of work to do, but the same God produces every gift in every person. and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
7 The evidence of the Spirit's presence is given to each person for the common good of everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak with wisdom. The same Spirit gives another person the ability to speak with knowledge. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
9 To another person the same Spirit gives [courageous] faith. To another person the same Spirit gives the ability to heal. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 Another can work miracles. Another can speak what God has revealed. Another can tell the difference between spirits. Another can speak in different kinds of languages. Another can interpret languages. to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
11 There is only one Spirit who does all these things by giving what God wants to give to each person. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
12 For example, the body is one unit and yet has many parts. As all the parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
13 By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether we are Jewish or Greek, slave or free, God gave all of us one Spirit to drink. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
14 As you know, the human body is not made up of only one part, but of many parts. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Suppose a foot says, |I'm not a hand, so I'm not part of the body!| Would that mean it's no longer part of the body? If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.
16 Or suppose an ear says, |I'm not an eye, so I'm not a part of the body!| Would that mean it's no longer part of the body? And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.
17 If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how could it smell? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
18 So God put each and every part of the body together as he wanted it. But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
19 How could it be a body if it only had one part? If all were a single member, where would the body be? If they were all one part, where would the body be?
20 So there are many parts but one body. As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 An eye can't say to a hand, |I don't need you!| Or again, the head can't say to the feet, |I don't need you!| The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”
22 The opposite is true. The parts of the body that we think are weaker are the ones we really need. On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
23 The parts of the body that we think are less honorable are the ones we give special honor. So our unpresentable parts are made more presentable. and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
24 However, our presentable parts don't need this kind of treatment. God has put the body together and given special honor to the part that doesn't have it. which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. 25 God's purpose was that the body should not be divided but rather that all of its parts should feel the same concern for each other. that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
26 If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts share its suffering. If one part is praised, all the others share in its happiness. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
27 You are Christ's body and each of you is an individual part of it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
28 In the church God has appointed first apostles, next prophets, third teachers, then those who perform miracles, then those who have the gift of healing, then those who help others, those who are managers, and those who can speak in a number of languages. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.
29 Not all believers are apostles, are they? Are all of them prophets? Do all of them teach? Do all of them perform miracles Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
30 or have gifts of healing? Can all of them speak in other languages or interpret languages? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
31 You [only] want the better gifts, but I will show you the best thing to do. But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
