1 Brethre, I woulde not that ye shoulde be ignoraunt, howe that all our fathers were vnder the cloude, and all passed through the sea, For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
2 And were all baptized vnto Moyses in the cloude, & in the sea: and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
3 And dyd all eate of one spirituall meate. and all ate the same spiritual food, They all ate the same spiritual food
4 And dyd all drynke of one maner of spirituall drynke. (And they dranke of that spirituall rocke that folowed them, which rocke was Christe.) and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
5 But in many of them had God no delite: For they were ouerthrowen in the wildernesse. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 These veryly are ensamples to vs, to thintent that we shoulde not lust after euyll thynges, as they also lusted. Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
7 Neither be ye idolatours, as were some of them, as it is written: The people sate downe to eate and drynke, and rose vp to play. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
8 Neither let vs commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and fell in one daye three and thirtie thousande. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
9 Neither let vs tempt Christe, as some of them tempted, and were destroyed of serpentes. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.
10 Neither murmure ye, as some of the also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
11 All these thinges happened vnto them for ensamples: but they are written to put vs in remembraunce, whom the endes of the worlde are come vpon. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
12 Wherfore, let hym that thynketh he standeth, take heede lest he fall. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
13 There hath no temptation taken you, but such as foloweth the nature of man: But God is faythfull, which shall not suffer you to be tempted aboue your strength: but shall with the temptation make away that ye maye be able to beare it. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
14 Wherfore my deare beloued, flee from idolatrie. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
15 I speake as vnto them which haue discretion, iudge ye what I say. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
16 The cuppe of blessyng which we blesse, is it not ye partakyng of the blood of Christe? The bread which we breake, is it not the partakyng of the body of Christe? The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17 For we that are many, are one bread and one body, in as much as we all are partakers of one bread. Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
18 Beholde Israel after the fleshe. Are not they which eate of the sacrifices, partakers of the aulter? Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
19 What say I then? that the idol is any thyng? Or that it which is offered to idols is any thyng? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20 Nay but this I saye that the thinges which the gentiles offer, they offer to deuyls, & not to God. And I woulde not that ye shoulde haue felowshippe with the deuils. No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.
21 Ye can not drynke ye cup of the Lorde, and the cup of deuils. Ye can not be partakers of the Lordes table, and of the table of deuyls. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.
22 Either do we prouoke the Lorde to anger? Are we stronger then he? Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 All thynges are lawfull for me, but all thynges are not expedient: All thynges are lawfull for me, but all thynges edifie not. “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything|—but not everything is constructive.
24 Let no man seeke his owne: but euery man anothers wealth. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
25 Whatsoeuer is solde in the market, that eate, and aske no question for conscience sake. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
26 For the earth is the Lordes, and all that therin is. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
27 If any of them which beleue not, byd you to a feast and ye be disposed to go, whatsoeuer is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
28 But yf any man say vnto you, this is offred vnto idols, eate not of it for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake. The earth is the Lordes and all that therin is. But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
29 Conscience I say, not thyne, but of the other. For why is my libertie, iudged of another mans conscience? I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?
30 For, if I take my part with thankes, why am I euyll spoken of, for that wherfore I geue thankes? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31 Whether therfore ye eate or drynke, or whatsoeuer ye do, do all to the prayse of God. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
32 See that ye geue none offence, neither to the Iewes, nor yet to the Grecians, neither to the Churche of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—
33 Euen as I please all men in all thynges, not seking myne owne profite, but the profite of many, that they might be saued. just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
