1 THEN all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, Behold, we are your blood and your flesh always; Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood.
2 And moreover in times past, even when Saul was king over us, it was you that led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you. You shall feed my people Israel, and you shall be ruler over all the tribes of Israel. In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’”
3 Wherefore all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they appointed David king over Israel. Thus the words of Samuel the prophet were confirmed, which he spoke in the name of the LORD. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had promised through Samuel.
4 Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (which was formerly called Jebus) where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there
5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, You shall not come in here. Nevertheless David gathered all the people together and took the city of Zion, which is called the city of David. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 And David said, Whoever smites a Jebusite person first shall be chief and commander of the army. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and King David appointed him chief and commander of the army. David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief.” Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7 And David dwelt in the city of Zion; therefore they called it the city of David. And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David.
8 And David built the city round about, even from Millo, which is outside; and David gave the east side of the city to the rest of the people who were in the villages. And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.
9 So David became greater and greater; and the LORD of hosts was with him. And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him.
10 These are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom and helped him to be made king over all Israel, according to the word of the LORD which he spoke concerning Israel. Now these are the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the LORD had promised—
11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: seated in the first rank, chief of thirty men, Gedho, a valiant man; he lifted up his spear and slew three hundred men in one hour. This is an account of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time. this is the list of David’s mighty warriors: Jashobeam, a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.
12 And after him was Eleazar his uncle's son, of the city of Dakhokh, who was over three hundred men. And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors.
13 He was with David at Pasi-de-maya, when the Philistines were fighting there, where there was a field of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines. He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines were gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the men fled from the Philistines. He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.
14 And they set themselves in the midst of the field, and delivered it and slew the Philistines; and the LORD wrought a great victory. But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and killed the Philistines. And the LORD saved them by a great victory. But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory.
15 Now three of the thirty chieftains went down to David, into the cave of Arlam; and the host of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Gabarey. Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David at the cave of Adullam, when the army of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.
16 And David dwelt then in the tent, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.
17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me a drink of water from the great cistern of Bethlehem that is at the gate of the city! And David said longingly, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!”
18 And as soon as three men heard it, they broke through the camp of the Philistines, and went and drew water out of the cistern of Bethlehem that was by the gate of the city, and took it and brought it to David; but David would not drink of it, but poured it out in the presence of the LORD, Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the LORD So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD.
19 And said, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing in the presence of my God; for these men went forth with the jeopardy of their lives. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three valiant men. and said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men. “God forbid that I should do this!” he said. “Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?” Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.
20 And Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of thirty; for he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and he was highly honored, promoted to be over thirty men. Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three. Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three.
21 He was more honorable than the thirty men, and he became their chief and fought like thirty men. He was the most renowned of the thirty and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three. He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a valiant man of the province of Kabzeel who had done good deeds; he slew the two mighty men of Moab; also he went down and slew a lion in the midst of a forest on a snowy day. And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.
23 And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down against him with a staff, and took the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and slew him with his own spear. And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear like a weaver’s beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.
24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and was more renowned than the three valiant men. These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and won a name beside the three mighty men. Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors.
25 And he was honorable among the three valiant men, for he fought like three mighty men; and David set him over his bodyguard and over the chiefs of the army; He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard. He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
26 Also the valiant men of the army were: Ashail the brother of Joab, Elhanan his uncle's son of Bethlehem, The mighty men were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, The mighty warriors were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,
27 Shammoth of the mount, King Helez the Pelonite, Shammoth of Harod, Helez the Pelonite, Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,
28 Ira the son of Ikkes of Tekoa, Abiezer of Anathoth, Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, Abiezer of Anathoth, Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa, Abiezer from Anathoth,
29 Sabbai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, Sibbekai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,
