1 And all Israel came together to David at Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood.
2 Even in time past, even before, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. 3 And all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the face of YHWH. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of YHWH by Samuel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. 4 And David went, and all Israel, to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, and there were the Jebusite, those dwelling in the land. And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there
5 And those dwelling in Jebus said to David, “You shall not come in here.” And David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David). The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 And David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusite first shall be head and chief.” And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and he became head. David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief.” Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7 And David dwelt in the stronghold; upon thus they called it the City of David. And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David.
8 And he built the city around it, from the Millo and to the surrounding area, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.
9 And David went, going on and becoming great, and YHWH of Hosts was with him. And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him.
10 And these were the heads of the mighty who were unto David, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king according to the word of YHWH concerning Israel. Now these are the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the LORD had promised—
11 And these are the numbers of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam son of a Hachmonite, chief of the captains; he lifted up his spear against three hundred, whom he wounded at one time. This is an account of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time. this is the list of David’s mighty warriors: Jashobeam, a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.
12 And after him was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite—he was among the three mighty men. And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors.
13 He was with David at Pas-dammim, and the Philistines were gathered there for battle. And a portion of ground there was full of barley, and the people fled from the Philistines. 15 And three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the camp of the Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. And David would not drink it, and he poured it out to YHWH, Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the LORD So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD.
19 and he said, “Far be it from me, my God, that I should do this; shall I drink the blood of these men with their lives? For with their lives they brought it.” And he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men. and said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men. “God forbid that I should do this!” he said. “Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?” Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.
20 And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the Three, and He wielded his spear against three hundred, killed them, and won a name among the three. Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three. Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three.
21 He was doubly honored above the three, and he became captain unto them. And to the Three he did not attain. He was the most renowned of the thirty and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three. He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
22 Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a man of valor, of great deeds, from Kabzeel: He struck down two champions of Moab, and He went down and killed the lion in the midst of a pit on the day of the snow. And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.
23 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of measure five by the cubit, and in the hand of the Egyptian was a spear like a weavers’ beam. And he went down to him with a staff and wrested the spear from the hand of the Egyptian, and he killed him with his own spear. And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear like a weaver’s beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.
24 These things Benaiah son of Jehoiada did, and to him was a name among the three mighty men. These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and won a name beside the three mighty men. Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors.
25 Indeed he was more honored than the thirty, and to the three he did not attain. And David set him over his guard. He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard. He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
26 And the mighty men of the armies: Asah-el the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Bethlehem, The mighty men were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, The mighty warriors were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,
