New Living Translation | King James Bible |
O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. | 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. |
You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. | 2Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. |
You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. | 3Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. |
You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. | 4For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. |
You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. | 5Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. |
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! | 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. |
I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! | 7Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? |
If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. | 8If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. |
If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, | 9If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; |
even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. | 10Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. |
I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— | 11If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. |
but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. | 12Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. |
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. | 13For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. |
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. | 14I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. |
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. | 15My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. |
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. | 16Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. |
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! | 17How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! |
I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! | 18If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. |
O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers! | 19Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. |
They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name. | 20For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. |
O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? | 21Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? |
Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies. | 22I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. |
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. | 23Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: |
Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. | 24And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. |
