New Living TranslationKing James Bible
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.”2And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him,3And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
“This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations!4As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations.5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!6And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
“I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you.7And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.” The Mark of the Covenant8And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.9And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
This is the covenant that you and your descendants must keep: Each male among you must be circumcised.10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
You must cut off the flesh of your foreskin as a sign of the covenant between me and you.11And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.
From generation to generation, every male child must be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth. This applies not only to members of your family but also to the servants born in your household and the foreign-born servants whom you have purchased.12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
All must be circumcised. Your bodies will bear the mark of my everlasting covenant.13He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
Any male who fails to be circumcised will be cut off from the covenant family for breaking the covenant.” Sarai Is Named Sarah14And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
Then God said to Abraham, “Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah.15And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.”16And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?”17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
So Abraham said to God, “May Ishmael live under your special blessing!”18And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!
But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant.19And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.20And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
But my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac, who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year.”21But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
When God had finished speaking, he left Abraham.22And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
On that very day Abraham took his son, Ishmael, and every male in his household, including those born there and those he had bought. Then he circumcised them, cutting off their foreskins, just as God had told him.23And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,24And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
and Ishmael, his son, was thirteen.25And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Both Abraham and his son, Ishmael, were circumcised on that same day,26In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.
along with all the other men and boys of the household, whether they were born there or bought as servants. All were circumcised with him.27And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
