Joab realized how much the king longed to see Absalom. | 1Meanwhile, Zeruiah's son Joab knew that the king's attention was focused on Absalom, |
So he sent for a woman from Tekoa who had a reputation for great wisdom. He said to her, “Pretend you are in mourning; wear mourning clothes and don’t put on lotions. Act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for a long time. | 2so he sent messengers to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, "Please play the role of a mourner, wear the clothes of a mourner, and refrain from using makeup. Act like a woman who's been in mourning for the dead for many days. |
Then go to the king and tell him the story I am about to tell you.” Then Joab told her what to say. | 3Then go to the king and speak to him like this…" Then Joab told her what to say. |
When the woman from Tekoa approached the king, she bowed with her face to the ground in deep respect and cried out, “O king! Help me!” | 4When the woman from Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, prostrating herself to address him, "Help, your majesty!" |
“What’s the trouble?” the king asked. “Alas, I am a widow!” she replied. “My husband is dead. | 5The king asked her, "What's your problem?" "I've been a widowed woman ever since my husband died," she answered. |
My two sons had a fight out in the field. And since no one was there to stop it, one of them was killed. | 6"Your humble servant used to have two sons, but they got into a fight out in the field. Because there was no one to keep them apart, one of them attacked the other and killed him. |
Now the rest of the family is demanding, ‘Let us have your son. We will execute him for murdering his brother. He doesn’t deserve to inherit his family’s property.’ They want to extinguish the only coal I have left, and my husband’s name and family will disappear from the face of the earth.” | 7Now please pay attention closely! My whole family is attacking your humble servant! They're saying, 'Turn over the one who attacked his brother and we'll put him to death in retribution for his brother, whose life he took. That way, we'll kill the heir also!' They're going to extinguish the only light left in my family, leaving my late husband neither an ongoing name nor a survivor on the face of the earth!" |
“Leave it to me,” the king told her. “Go home, and I’ll see to it that no one touches him.” | 8Then the king replied to the woman, "Go home and I'll issue a special order just for you." |
“Oh, thank you, my lord the king,” the woman from Tekoa replied. “If you are criticized for helping me, let the blame fall on me and on my father’s house, and let the king and his throne be innocent.” | 9But the woman from Tekoa told the king, "Your majesty, let any guilt for this be on me and on my ancestors' household, and not on my king or his throne!" |
“If anyone objects,” the king said, “bring him to me. I can assure you he will never harm you again!” | 10The king replied, "Bring anyone who talks to you about this to me, and he certainly won't be bothering you anymore!" |
Then she said, “Please swear to me by the LORD your God that you won’t let anyone take vengeance against my son. I want no more bloodshed.” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he replied, “not a hair on your son’s head will be disturbed!” | 11Then she said, "Your majesty, please remember the LORD your God, so that blood avengers don't do any more damage! Otherwise, they'll destroy my son!" So he promised, "As the LORD lives, not even a single hair from your son's head will fall to the ground!" |
“Please allow me to ask one more thing of my lord the king,” she said. “Go ahead and speak,” he responded. | 12At this, the woman responded, "Would your majesty the king please allow your humble servant to say one more thing?" "Say it…" he replied. |
She replied, “Why don’t you do as much for the people of God as you have promised to do for me? You have convicted yourself in making this decision, because you have refused to bring home your own banished son. | 13"Why, then," the woman asked, "are you planning to act just like this against God's people? Based on what your majesty has said, you're acting like one who is guilty himself, because you're not bringing back the one whom you've banished! |
All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him. | 14After all, even though we all die, and we're all like water being spilled on the ground that cannot be recovered, nevertheless God doesn't take away life, but carries out his plans so as not to cast away permanently from him those who are presently estranged. |
“I have come to plead with my lord the king because people have threatened me. I said to myself, ‘Perhaps the king will listen to me | 15"Now as to why I've come to speak with your majesty the king, it's because the people have made me afraid, so your humble servant told herself, 'I'll go speak to the king, so perhaps the king will do what his humble servant has requested. |
and rescue us from those who would cut us off from the inheritance God has given us. | 16Perhaps the king will listen and deliver his humble servant from the oppression of the man who intends to eliminate both me and my son from what God has apportioned to us!' |
Yes, my lord the king will give us peace of mind again.’ I know that you are like an angel of God in discerning good from evil. May the LORD your God be with you.” | 17"So your humble servant is saying, 'Please, your majesty, let what the king has to say be of comfort, because just as the angel of God is, so also is your majesty the king to discern both good and evil. And may the LORD your God remain present with you.'" |
“I must know one thing,” the king replied, “and tell me the truth.” “Yes, my lord the king,” she responded. | 18In reply, the king asked the woman, "Please don't conceal anything about which I'm going to be asking you now." So the woman replied, "Please, your majesty, let the king speak." |
“Did Joab put you up to this?” And the woman replied, “My lord the king, how can I deny it? Nobody can hide anything from you. Yes, Joab sent me and told me what to say. | 19Then the king asked, "Is Joab behind all of this with you?" "As your soul lives, your majesty, the king," the woman answered, "no one can divert anything left or right from what your majesty the king has spoken! As a matter of fact, it was your servant Joab! He was there, giving me precise orders about everything that your humble servant was to say. Your servant Joab did this, |
He did it to place the matter before you in a different light. But you are as wise as an angel of God, and you understand everything that happens among us!” | 20intending to change the outcome of this matter. Nevertheless, your majesty is wise, like the wisdom of the angel of God, to be aware of everything that's going on throughout the earth." |
So the king sent for Joab and told him, “All right, go and bring back the young man Absalom.” | 21Then the king addressed Joab, "Look! I'll do this thing that you've requested. Go bring back the young man Absalom." |
Joab bowed with his face to the ground in deep respect and said, “At last I know that I have gained your approval, my lord the king, for you have granted me this request!” | 22At this, Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrating himself to bless the king, and then said, "Today your servant realizes that he's found favor with you, your majesty, in that the king has acted on the request of his servant." |
Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. | 23Then Joab got up, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. |
But the king gave this order: “Absalom may go to his own house, but he must never come into my presence.” So Absalom did not see the king. Absalom Reconciled to David | 24Nevertheless, the king said, "Let him return to his own home and not show his face to me." So Absalom returned to his own home and did not show his face to the king. |
Now Absalom was praised as the most handsome man in all Israel. He was flawless from head to foot. | 25Now throughout all of Israel no one was as handsome as Absalom or so highly praised, from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there wasn't a single thing wrong about him. |
He cut his hair only once a year, and then only because it was so heavy. When he weighed it out, it came to five pounds! | 26Whenever he cut his hair —he cut it at the end of every year, because it grew thick on his head, which is why he cut it—his hair weighed in at 200 shekels measured by the royal standard. |
He had three sons and one daughter. His daughter’s name was Tamar, and she was very beautiful. | 27Absalom fathered three sons and one daughter, whom he named Tamar. She was a beautiful woman, both in form and appearance. |
Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years, but he never got to see the king. | 28Meanwhile, Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years, but never saw the king's face. |
Then Absalom sent for Joab to ask him to intercede for him, but Joab refused to come. Absalom sent for him a second time, but again Joab refused to come. | 29After this, Absalom sent for Joab, intending to send him to the king, but Joab would not come. Absalom sent for him a second time, but he still would not come. |
So Absalom said to his servants, “Go and set fire to Joab’s barley field, the field next to mine.” So they set his field on fire, as Absalom had commanded. | 30So Absalom told his servants, "Observe that Joab's grain field lies next to mine. He has barley planted there. Go set it on fire." So Absalom's servants set the field on fire. |
Then Joab came to Absalom at his house and demanded, “Why did your servants set my field on fire?” | 31At this, Joab got up, went to Absalom's home, and demanded of him, "Why did your servants set fire to my grain field?" |
And Absalom replied, “Because I wanted you to ask the king why he brought me back from Geshur if he didn’t intend to see me. I might as well have stayed there. Let me see the king; if he finds me guilty of anything, then let him kill me.” | 32In answer to Joab, Absalom replied, "Look, I sent for you, telling you 'Come here so I can send you to the king to ask him "What's the point in moving here from Geshur? I would have been better off to have remained there!"' So let me see the king's face, and if I'm guilty of anything, let him execute me!" |
So Joab told the king what Absalom had said. Then at last David summoned Absalom, who came and bowed low before the king, and the king kissed him. | 33So when Joab approached the king and told him what Absalom had said, he summoned Absalom, who then came to the king and fell to the ground on his face in front of him. Then the king kissed Absalom. |
