New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside.1When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”2And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.3And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Then Jesus said to him, “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.” The Faith of a Roman Officer4And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him,5When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him,
“Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain.”6“Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.”
Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”7And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.8But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”9For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!10When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.
And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.11I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”12while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour. Jesus Heals Many People13And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.
When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever.14And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever.
But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him.15He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him.
That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick.16That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.
This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, “He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.” The Cost of Following Jesus17This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”
When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake.18Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side.
Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”19And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”20And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.”21Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead. ” Jesus Calms the Storm22And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.23And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him.
Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.24And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.
The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”25And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.”
Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.26And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” Jesus Heals Two Demon-Possessed Men27And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gadarenes, two men who were possessed by demons met him. They came out of the tombs and were so violent that no one could go through that area.28And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way.
They began screaming at him, “Why are you interfering with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?”29And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding in the distance.30Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them.
So the demons begged, “If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.”31And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.”
“All right, go!” Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.32And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.
The herdsmen fled to the nearby town, telling everyone what happened to the demon-possessed men.33The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
Then the entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone.34And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
