New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. | 1Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. |
The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. | 2And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. |
Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. | 3When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did, |
This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. | 4Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned. |
From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. | 5From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field. |
So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, | 6So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, |
and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded. | 7and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.” |
But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. | 8But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care. |
No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” | 9No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?” |
She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. | 10Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her. |
One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. | 11One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside. |
She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. | 12She grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his cloak in her hand, he escaped and ran outside. |
When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled, | 13When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, |
she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. | 14she called her household servants. “Look,” she said, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could. |
When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.” | 15When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” |
She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. | 16So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s cloak beside her until his master came home. |
Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said. | 17Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me, |
“But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” Joseph Put in Prison | 18but when I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” |
Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her. | 19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” he burned with anger. |
So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained. | 20So Joseph’s master took him and had him thrown into the prison where the king’s prisoners were confined. While Joseph was there in the prison, |
But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. | 21the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. |
Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. | 22And the warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care, so that he was responsible for all that was done in the prison. |
The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed. | 23The warden did not concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. |
