New King James Version | International Standard Version |
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, | 1You used to be dead because of your offenses and sins |
in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, | 2that you once practiced as you lived according to the ways of this present world and according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now active in those who are disobedient. |
among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. | 3Indeed, all of us once behaved like them in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and senses. By nature we were destined for wrath, just like everyone else. |
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, | 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us |
even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), | 5even when we were dead because of our offenses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by grace you have been saved), |
and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, | 6raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in the Messiah Jesus, |
that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. | 7so that in the coming ages he might display the limitless riches of his grace that comes to us through his kindness in the Messiah Jesus. |
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, | 8For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God |
not of works, lest anyone should boast. | 9and not the result of actions, to put a stop to all boasting. |
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. | 10For we are God's masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life. |
Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands— | 11So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth were called "the uncircumcised" by those who called themselves "the circumcised." They underwent physical circumcision done by human hands. |
that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. | 12At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope and were in the world without God. |
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. | 13But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. |
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, | 14For it is he who is our peace. Through his mortality he made both groups one by tearing down the wall of hostility that divided them. |
having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, | 15He rendered the Law inoperative, along with its commandments and regulations, thus creating in himself one new humanity from the two, thereby making peace, |
and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. | 16and reconciling both groups to God in one body through the cross, on which he eliminated the hostility. |
And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. | 17He came and proclaimed peace for you who were far away and for you who were near. |
For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. | 18For through him, both of us have access to the Father by one Spirit. |
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, | 19That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, |
having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, | 20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone. |
in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, | 21In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord. |
in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. | 22You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell. |
