New King James VersionEnglish Standard Version
I have come to my garden, my sister, my spouse; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends! Drink, yes, drink deeply, O beloved ones!1I came to my garden, my sister, my bride, I gathered my myrrh with my spice, I ate my honeycomb with my honey, I drank my wine with my milk. Eat, friends, drink, and be drunk with love!
I sleep, but my heart is awake; It is the voice of my beloved! He knocks, saying, “Open for me, my sister, my love, My dove, my perfect one; For my head is covered with dew, My locks with the drops of the night.”2I slept, but my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”
I have taken off my robe; How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet; How can I defile them?3I had put off my garment; how could I put it on? I had bathed my feet; how could I soil them?
My beloved put his hand By the latch of the door, And my heart yearned for him.4My beloved put his hand to the latch, and my heart was thrilled within me.
I arose to open for my beloved, And my hands dripped with myrrh, My fingers with liquid myrrh, On the handles of the lock.5I arose to open to my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the bolt.
I opened for my beloved, But my beloved had turned away and was gone. My heart leaped up when he spoke. I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.6I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.
The watchmen who went about the city found me. They struck me, they wounded me; The keepers of the walls Took my veil away from me.7The watchmen found me as they went about in the city; they beat me, they bruised me, they took away my veil, those watchmen of the walls.
I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, That you tell him I am lovesick!8I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if you find my beloved, that you tell him I am sick with love.
What is your beloved More than another beloved, O fairest among women? What is your beloved More than another beloved, That you so charge us?9What is your beloved more than another beloved, O most beautiful among women? What is your beloved more than another beloved, that you thus adjure us?
My beloved is white and ruddy, Chief among ten thousand.10My beloved is radiant and ruddy, distinguished among ten thousand.
His head is like the finest gold; His locks are wavy, And black as a raven.11His head is the finest gold; his locks are wavy, black as a raven.
His eyes are like doves By the rivers of waters, Washed with milk, And fitly set.12His eyes are like doves beside streams of water, bathed in milk, sitting beside a full pool.
His cheeks are like a bed of spices, Banks of scented herbs. His lips are lilies, Dripping liquid myrrh.13His cheeks are like beds of spices, mounds of sweet-smelling herbs. His lips are lilies, dripping liquid myrrh.
His hands are rods of gold Set with beryl. His body is carved ivory Inlaid with sapphires.14His arms are rods of gold, set with jewels. His body is polished ivory, bedecked with sapphires.
His legs are pillars of marble Set on bases of fine gold. His countenance is like Lebanon, Excellent as the cedars.15His legs are alabaster columns, set on bases of gold. His appearance is like Lebanon, choice as the cedars.
His mouth is most sweet, Yes, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, And this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem!16His mouth is most sweet, and he is altogether desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
