1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

1The LORD spoke to Moses:

2“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God.

2"Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD your God.

3According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances.

3Do not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, or follow the practices of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. You must not follow their customs.

4You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the LORD your God.

4You are to practice my ordinances and you are to keep my statutes by following them; I am the LORD your God.

5You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.

5Keep my statutes and ordinances; a person will live if he does them. I am the LORD.

6‘None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness: I am the LORD.

6"You are not to come near any close relative for sexual intercourse; I am the LORD.

7The nakedness of your father or the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover. She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness.

7You are not to violate the intimacy that belongs to your father and mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual intercourse with her.

8The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness.

8You are not to have sex with your father's wife; she is your father's family.

9The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere, their nakedness you shall not uncover.

9You are not to have sexual intercourse with your sister, either your father's daughter or your mother's, whether born at home or born elsewhere. You are not to have sex with her.

10The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for theirs is your own nakedness.

10You are not to have sexual intercourse with your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter, for they are your family.

11The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten by your father—she is your sister—you shall not uncover her nakedness.

11You are not to have sexual intercourse with your father's wife's daughter, who is adopted by your father; she is your sister.

12You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is near of kin to your father.

12You are not to have sexual intercourse with your father's sister; she is your father's close relative.

13You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is near of kin to your mother.

13You are not to have sexual intercourse with your mother's sister, for she is your mother's close relative.

14You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother. You shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt.

14You are not to violate the intimacy that belongs to your father's brother by approaching his wife to have sexual intercourse; she is your aunt.

15You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law—she is your son’s wife—you shall not uncover her nakedness.

15You are not to have sexual intercourse with your daughter-in-law. She is your son's wife; you are not to have sex with her.

16You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness.

16You are not to have sexual intercourse with your brother's wife; she is your brother's family.

17You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, nor shall you take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness. They are near of kin to her. It is wickedness.

17You are not to have sexual intercourse with a woman and her daughter. You are not to marry her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter and have sex with her. They are close relatives; it is depraved.

18Nor shall you take a woman as a rival to her sister, to uncover her nakedness while the other is alive.

18You are not to marry a woman as a rival to her sister and have sexual intercourse with her during her sister's lifetime.

19‘Also you shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness as long as she is in her customary impurity.

19"You are not to approach a woman during her menstrual impurity to have sexual intercourse with her.

20Moreover you shall not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife, to defile yourself with her.

20You are not to have sexual intercourse with your neighbor's wife, defiling yourself with her.

21And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

21"You are not to sacrifice any of your children in the fire to Molech. Do not profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.

22You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.

22You are not to sleep with a man as with a woman; it is detestable.

23Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion.

23You are not to have sexual intercourse with any animal, defiling yourself with it; a woman is not to present herself to an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.

24‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you.

24"Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices, for the nations I am driving out before you have defiled themselves by all these things.

25For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.

25The land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its iniquity, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants.

26You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, either any of your own nation or any stranger who dwells among you

26But you are to keep my statutes and ordinances. You must not commit any of these detestable acts--not the native or the alien who resides among you.

27(for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you, and thus the land is defiled),

27For the people who were in the land prior to you have committed all these detestable acts, and the land has become defiled.

28lest the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

28If you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the nations that were before you.

29For whoever commits any of these abominations, the persons who commit them shall be cut off from among their people.

29Any person who does any of these detestable practices is to be cut off from his people.

30‘Therefore you shall keep My ordinance, so that you do not commit any of these abominable customs which were committed before you, and that you do not defile yourselves by them: I am the LORD your God.’ ”

30You must keep my instruction to not do any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them; I am the LORD your God."
