In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, "This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover."1In those days Hezekiah was stricken with a terminal illness. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz visited him and told him, "This is what the LORD says, 'Give instructions to your household, for you are about to die; you will not get well.'"
Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,2Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
"Remember, LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly.3"Please, LORD. Remember how I have served you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion, and how I have carried out your will." Then Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah:4The LORD told Isaiah,
"Go and tell Hezekiah, 'This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life.5"Go and tell Hezekiah: 'This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David says: "I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I will add fifteen years to your life,
And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.6and rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. I will shield this city."'"
"'This is the LORD's sign to you that the LORD will do what he has promised:7Isaiah replied, "This is your sign from the LORD confirming that the LORD will do what he has said:
I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.'" So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down.8Look, I will make the shadow go back ten steps on the stairs of Ahaz." And then the shadow went back ten steps.
A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:9This is the prayer of King Hezekiah of Judah when he was sick and then recovered from his illness:
I said, "In the prime of my life must I go through the gates of death and be robbed of the rest of my years?"10"I thought, 'In the middle of my life I must walk through the gates of Sheol, I am deprived of the rest of my years.'
I said, "I will not again see the LORD himself in the land of the living; no longer will I look on my fellow man, or be with those who now dwell in this world.11"I thought, 'I will no longer see the LORD in the land of the living, I will no longer look on humankind with the inhabitants of the world.
Like a shepherd's tent my house has been pulled down and taken from me. Like a weaver I have rolled up my life, and he has cut me off from the loom; day and night you made an end of me.12My dwelling place is removed and taken away from me like a shepherd's tent. I rolled up my life like a weaver rolls cloth; from the loom he cuts me off. You turn day into night and end my life.
I waited patiently till dawn, but like a lion he broke all my bones; day and night you made an end of me.13I cry out until morning; like a lion he shatters all my bones; you turn day into night and end my life.
I cried like a swift or thrush, I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew weak as I looked to the heavens. I am being threatened; Lord, come to my aid!"14Like a swallow or a thrush I chirp, I coo like a dove; my eyes grow tired from looking up to the sky. O sovereign master, I am oppressed; help me!
But what can I say? He has spoken to me, and he himself has done this. I will walk humbly all my years because of this anguish of my soul.15What can I say? He has decreed and acted. I will walk slowly all my years because I am overcome with grief.
Lord, by such things people live; and my spirit finds life in them too. You restored me to health and let me live.16O sovereign master, your decrees can give men life; may years of life be restored to me. Restore my health and preserve my life.'
Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back.17"Look, the grief I experienced was for my benefit. You delivered me from the pit of oblivion. For you removed all my sins from your sight.
For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.18Indeed Sheol does not give you thanks; death does not praise you. Those who descend into the pit do not anticipate your faithfulness.
The living, the living--they praise you, as I am doing today; parents tell their children about your faithfulness.19The living person, the living person, he gives you thanks, as I do today. A father tells his sons about your faithfulness.
The LORD will save me, and we will sing with stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the temple of the LORD.20The LORD is about to deliver me, and we will celebrate with music for the rest of our lives in the LORD's temple."
Isaiah had said, "Prepare a poultice of figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover."21Isaiah ordered, "Let them take a fig cake and apply it to the ulcerated sore and he will get well."
Hezekiah had asked, "What will be the sign that I will go up to the temple of the LORD?"22Hezekiah said, "What is the confirming sign that I will go up to the LORD's temple?"
