| 1"As for you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say: 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: Look, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal! | 1“Son of man, prophesy against Gog. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: I am your enemy, O Gog, ruler of the nations of Meshech and Tubal. |
| 2I will turn you around and drag you along; I will lead you up from the remotest parts of the north and bring you against the mountains of Israel. | 2I will turn you around and drive you toward the mountains of Israel, bringing you from the distant north. |
| 3I will knock your bow out of your left hand and make your arrows fall from your right hand. | 3I will knock the bow from your left hand and the arrows from your right hand, and I will leave you helpless. |
| 4You will fall dead on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the people who are with you. I give you as food to every kind of bird and every wild beast. | 4You and your army and your allies will all die on the mountains. I will feed you to the vultures and wild animals. |
| 5You will fall dead in the open field; for I have spoken, declares the sovereign LORD. | 5You will fall in the open fields, for I have spoken, says the Sovereign LORD. |
| 6I will send fire on Magog and those who live securely in the coastlands; then they will know that I am the LORD. | 6And I will rain down fire on Magog and on all your allies who live safely on the coasts. Then they will know that I am the LORD. |
| 7"'I will make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. | 7“In this way, I will make known my holy name among my people of Israel. I will not let anyone bring shame on it. And the nations, too, will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. |
| 8Realize that it is coming and it will be done, declares the sovereign LORD. It is the day I have spoken about. | 8That day of judgment will come, says the Sovereign LORD. Everything will happen just as I have declared it. |
| 9"'Then those who live in the cities of Israel will go out and use the weapons for kindling--the shields, bows and arrows, war clubs and spears--they will burn them for seven years. | 9“Then the people in the towns of Israel will go out and pick up your small and large shields, bows and arrows, javelins and spears, and they will use them for fuel. There will be enough to last them seven years! |
| 10They will not need to take wood from the field or cut down trees from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons. They will take the loot from those who looted them and seize the plunder of those who plundered them, declares the sovereign LORD. | 10They won’t need to cut wood from the fields or forests, for these weapons will give them all the fuel they need. They will plunder those who planned to plunder them, and they will rob those who planned to rob them, says the Sovereign LORD. |
| 11"'On that day I will assign Gog a grave in Israel. It will be the valley of those who travel east of the sea; it will block the way of the travelers. There they will bury Gog and all his horde; they will call it the valley of Hamon-Gog. | 11“And I will make a vast graveyard for Gog and his hordes in the Valley of the Travelers, east of the Dead Sea. It will block the way of those who travel there, and they will change the name of the place to the Valley of Gog’s Hordes. |
| 12For seven months Israel will bury them, in order to cleanse the land. | 12It will take seven months for the people of Israel to bury the bodies and cleanse the land. |
| 13All the people of the land will bury them, and it will be a memorial for them on the day I magnify myself, declares the sovereign LORD. | 13Everyone in Israel will help, for it will be a glorious victory for Israel when I demonstrate my glory on that day, says the Sovereign LORD. |
| 14They will designate men to scout continually through the land, burying those who remain on the surface of the ground, in order to cleanse it. They will search for seven full months. | 14“After seven months, teams of men will be appointed to search the land for skeletons to bury, so the land will be made clean again. |
| 15When the scouts survey the land and see a human bone, they will place a sign by it, until those assigned to burial duty have buried it in the valley of Hamon-Gog. | 15Whenever bones are found, a marker will be set up so the burial crews will take them to be buried in the Valley of Gog’s Hordes. |
| 16(A city by the name of Hamonah will also be there.) They will cleanse the land.' | 16(There will be a town there named Hamonah, which means ‘horde.’) And so the land will finally be cleansed. |
| 17"As for you, son of man, this is what the sovereign LORD says: Tell every kind of bird and every wild beast: 'Assemble and come! Gather from all around to my slaughter which I am going to make for you, a great slaughter on the mountains of Israel! You will eat flesh and drink blood. | 17“And now, son of man, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Call all the birds and wild animals. Say to them: Gather together for my great sacrificial feast. Come from far and near to the mountains of Israel, and there eat flesh and drink blood! |
| 18You will eat the flesh of warriors and drink the blood of the princes of the earth--the rams, lambs, goats, and bulls, all of them fattened animals of Bashan. | 18Eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of princes as though they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls—all fattened animals from Bashan! |
| 19You will eat fat until you are full, and drink blood until you are drunk, at my slaughter which I have made for you. | 19Gorge yourselves with flesh until you are glutted; drink blood until you are drunk. This is the sacrificial feast I have prepared for you. |
| 20You will fill up at my table with horses and charioteers, with warriors and all the soldiers,' declares the sovereign LORD. | 20Feast at my banquet table—feast on horses and charioteers, on mighty men and all kinds of valiant warriors, says the Sovereign LORD. |
| 21"I will display my majesty among the nations. All the nations will witness the judgment I have executed, and the power I have exhibited among them. | 21“In this way, I will demonstrate my glory to the nations. Everyone will see the punishment I have inflicted on them and the power of my fist when I strike. |
| 22Then the house of Israel will know that I am the LORD their God, from that day forward. | 22And from that time on the people of Israel will know that I am the LORD their God. |
| 23The nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile due to their iniquity, for they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies; all of them died by the sword. | 23The nations will then know why Israel was sent away to exile—it was punishment for sin, for they were unfaithful to their God. Therefore, I turned away from them and let their enemies destroy them. |
| 24According to their uncleanness and rebellion I have dealt with them, and I hid my face from them. | 24I turned my face away and punished them because of their defilement and their sins. Restoration for God’s People |
| 25"Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and I will have mercy on the entire house of Israel. I will be zealous for my holy name. | 25“So now, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will end the captivity of my people ; I will have mercy on all Israel, for I jealously guard my holy reputation! |
| 26They will bear their shame for all their unfaithful acts against me, when they live securely on their land with no one to make them afraid. | 26They will accept responsibility for their past shame and unfaithfulness after they come home to live in peace in their own land, with no one to bother them. |
| 27When I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will magnify myself among them in the sight of many nations. | 27When I bring them home from the lands of their enemies, I will display my holiness among them for all the nations to see. |
| 28Then they will know that I am the LORD their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations, and then gathered them into their own land. I will not leave any of them in exile any longer. | 28Then my people will know that I am the LORD their God, because I sent them away to exile and brought them home again. I will leave none of my people behind. |
| 29I will no longer hide my face from them, when I pour out my Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the sovereign LORD." | 29And I will never again turn my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit upon the people of Israel. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!” |
