Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, purchased him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.
The LORD was with Joseph. He was successful and lived in the household of his Egyptian master.2The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
His master observed that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made everything he was doing successful.3Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar appointed Joseph overseer of his household and put him in charge of everything he owned.4So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.
From the time Potiphar appointed him over his household and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's household for Joseph's sake. The blessing of the LORD was on everything that he had, both in his house and in his fields.5It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house on account of Joseph; thus the LORD'S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.
So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph's care; he gave no thought to anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well built and good-looking.6So he left everything he owned in Joseph's charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
Soon after these things, his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Have sex with me."7It came about after these events that his master's wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me."
But he refused, saying to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not give any thought to his household with me here, and everything that he owns he has put into my care.8But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.
There is no one greater in this household than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?"9"There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?"
Even though she continued to speak to Joseph day after day, he did not respond to her invitation to have sex with her. 10As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.
One day he went into the house to do his work when none of the household servants were there in the house.11Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.
She grabbed him by his outer garment, saying, "Have sex with me!" But he left his outer garment in her hand and ran outside.12She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
When she saw that he had left his outer garment in her hand and had run outside,13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,
she called for her household servants and said to them, "See, my husband brought in a Hebrew man to us to humiliate us. He tried to have sex with me, but I screamed loudly.14she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.
When he heard me raise my voice and scream, he left his outer garment beside me and ran outside." 15"When he heard that I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside."
So she laid his outer garment beside her until his master came home.16So she left his garment beside her until his master came home.
This is what she said to him: "That Hebrew slave you brought to us tried to humiliate me,17Then she spoke to him with these words, "The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me;
but when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his outer garment and ran outside." 18and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside."
When his master heard his wife say, "This is the way your slave treated me," he became furious.19Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "This is what your slave did to me," his anger burned.
Joseph's master took him and threw him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. So he was there in the prison. 20So Joseph's master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the king's prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.
But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him kindness. He granted him favor in the sight of the prison warden.21But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.
The warden put all the prisoners under Joseph's care. He was in charge of whatever they were doing.22The chief jailer committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.
The warden did not concern himself with anything that was in Joseph's care because the LORD was with him and whatever he was doing the LORD was making successful. 23The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph's charge because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made to prosper.
