| 1During the reign of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, King Rezin of Syria and King Pekah son of Remaliah of Israel marched up to Jerusalem to do battle, but they were unable to prevail against it. | 1This took place during the reign of Ahaz, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah king of Judah: Rezin king of Aram, along with Pekah, son of Remaliah, king of Israel, waged war against Jerusalem, but he could not succeed. |
| 2It was reported to the family of David, "Syria has allied with Ephraim." They and their people were emotionally shaken, just as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. | 2When it became known to the house of David that Aram had occupied Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz and the hearts of his people trembled like trees of a forest shaking in the wind. |
| 3So the LORD told Isaiah, "Go out with your son Shear-jashub and meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool which is located on the road to the field where they wash and dry cloth. | 3Then the LORD said to Isaiah, "Go out with your son Shear-jashub to meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, by the road to the Fuller's Field. |
| 4Tell him, 'Make sure you stay calm! Don't be afraid! Don't be intimidated by these two stubs of smoking logs, or by the raging anger of Rezin, Syria, and the son of Remaliah. | 4Say to him: Calm down and be quiet. Don't be afraid or cowardly because of these two smoldering stubs of firebrands, the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram, and the son of Remaliah. |
| 5Syria has plotted with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah to bring about your demise. | 5For Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has plotted harm against you. They say, |
| 6They say, "Let's attack Judah, terrorize it, and conquer it. Then we'll set up the son of Tabeel as its king." | 6Let us go up against Judah, terrorize it, and conquer it for ourselves. Then we can install Tabeel's son as king in it.'" |
| 7For this reason the sovereign master, the LORD, says: "It will not take place; it will not happen. | 7This is what the Lord GOD says: It will not happen; it will not occur. |
| 8For Syria's leader is Damascus, and the leader of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will no longer exist as a nation. | 8The head of Aram is Damascus, the head of Damascus is Rezin (within 65 years Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people), |
| 9Ephraim's leader is Samaria, and Samaria's leader is the son of Remaliah. If your faith does not remain firm, then you will not remain secure." | 9the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not stand firm in your faith, then you will not stand at all. |
| 10The LORD again spoke to Ahaz: | 10Then the LORD spoke again to Ahaz: " |
| 11"Ask for a confirming sign from the LORD your God. You can even ask for something miraculous." | 11Ask for a sign from the LORD your God--from the depths of Sheol to the heights of heaven." |
| 12But Ahaz responded, "I don't want to ask; I don't want to put the LORD to a test." | 12But Ahaz replied, "I will not ask. I will not test the LORD." |
| 13So Isaiah replied, "Pay attention, family of David. Do you consider it too insignificant to try the patience of men? Is that why you are also trying the patience of my God? | 13Isaiah said, "Listen, house of David! Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men? Will you also try the patience of my God? |
| 14For this reason the sovereign master himself will give you a confirming sign. Look, this young woman is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel. | 14Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel. |
| 15He will eat sour milk and honey, which will help him know how to reject evil and choose what is right. | 15By the time he learns to reject what is bad and choose what is good, he will be eating butter and honey. |
| 16Here is why this will be so: Before the child knows how to reject evil and choose what is right, the land whose two kings you fear will be desolate. | 16For before the boy knows to reject what is bad and choose what is good, the land of the two kings you dread will be abandoned. |
| 17The LORD will bring on you, your people, and your father's family a time unlike any since Ephraim departed from Judah--the king of Assyria!" | 17The LORD will bring on you, your people, and the house of your father, such a time as has never been since Ephraim separated from Judah--the king of Assyria is coming." |
| 18At that time the LORD will whistle for flies from the distant streams of Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria. | 18On that day the LORD will whistle to the fly that is at the farthest streams of the Nile and to the bee that is in the land of Assyria. |
| 19All of them will come and make their home in the ravines between the cliffs, and in the crevices of the cliffs, in all the thorn bushes, and in all the watering holes. | 19All of them will come and settle in the steep ravines, in the clefts of the rocks, in all the thornbushes, and in all the water holes. |
| 20At that time the sovereign master will use a razor hired from the banks of the Euphrates River, the king of Assyria, to shave the head and the pubic hair; it will also shave off the beard. | 20On that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River--the king of Assyria--to shave the head, the hair on the legs, and to remove the beard as well. |
| 21At that time a man will keep alive a young cow from the herd and a couple of goats. | 21On that day a man will raise a young cow and two sheep, |
| 22From the abundance of milk they produce, he will have sour milk for his meals. Indeed, everyone left in the heart of the land will eat sour milk and honey. | 22and from the abundant milk they give he will eat butter, for every survivor in the land will eat butter and honey. |
| 23At that time every place where there had been a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels will be overrun with thorns and briers. | 23And on that day every place where there were 1,000 vines, worth 1,000 pieces of silver, will become thorns and briers. |
| 24With bow and arrow men will hunt there, for the whole land will be covered with thorns and briers. | 24A man will go there with bow and arrows because the whole land will be thorns and briers. |
| 25They will stay away from all the hills that were cultivated, for fear of the thorns and briers. Cattle will graze there and sheep will trample on them. | 25You will not go to all the hills that were once tilled with a hoe, for fear of the thorns and briers. Those hills will be places for oxen to graze and for sheep to trample. |
