Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
"Take a census of the Kohathites from among the Levites, by their families and by their clans,2“Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their clans and their fathers’ houses,
from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, all who enter the company to do the work in the tent of meeting.3from thirty years old up to fifty years old, all who can come on duty, to do the work in the tent of meeting.
This is the service of the Kohathites in the tent of meeting, relating to the most holy things.4This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: the most holy things.
When it is time for the camp to journey, Aaron and his sons must come and take down the screening curtain and cover the ark of the testimony with it.5When the camp is to set out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down the veil of the screen and cover the ark of the testimony with it.
Then they must put over it a covering of fine leather and spread over that a cloth entirely of blue, and then they must insert its poles. 6Then they shall put on it a covering of goatskin and spread on top of that a cloth all of blue, and shall put in its poles.
"On the table of the presence they must spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the pans, the bowls, and the pitchers for pouring, and the Bread of the Presence must be on it continually.7And over the table of the bread of the Presence they shall spread a cloth of blue and put on it the plates, the dishes for incense, the bowls, and the flagons for the drink offering; the regular showbread also shall be on it.
They must spread over them a scarlet cloth, and cover the same with a covering of fine leather; and they must insert its poles. 8Then they shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles.
"They must take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand of the light, with its lamps, its wick-trimmers, its trays, and all its oil vessels, with which they service it.9And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the lampstand for the light, with its lamps, its tongs, its trays, and all the vessels for oil with which it is supplied.
Then they must put it with all its utensils in a covering of fine leather, and put it on a carrying beam. 10And they shall put it with all its utensils in a covering of goatskin and put it on the carrying frame.
"They must spread a blue cloth on the gold altar, and cover it with a covering of fine leather; and they must insert its poles.11And over the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue and cover it with a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles.
Then they must take all the utensils of the service, with which they serve in the sanctuary, put them in a blue cloth, cover them with a covering of fine leather, and put them on a carrying beam.12And they shall take all the vessels of the service that are used in the sanctuary and put them in a cloth of blue and cover them with a covering of goatskin and put them on the carrying frame.
Also, they must take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it.13And they shall take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it.
Then they must place on it all its implements with which they serve there--the trays, the meat forks, the shovels, the basins, and all the utensils of the altar--and they must spread on it a covering of fine leather, and then insert its poles. 14And they shall put on it all the utensils of the altar, which are used for the service there, the fire pans, the forks, the shovels, and the basins, all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread on it a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles.
"When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is ready to journey, then the Kohathites will come to carry them; but they must not touch any holy thing, or they will die. These are the responsibilities of the Kohathites with the tent of meeting. 15And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, as the camp sets out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry these, but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the things of the tent of meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry.
"The appointed responsibility of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest is for the oil for the light, and the spiced incense, and the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil; he also has the appointed responsibility over all the tabernacle with all that is in it, over the sanctuary and over all its furnishings." 16“And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall have charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil, with the oversight of the whole tabernacle and all that is in it, of the sanctuary and its vessels.”
Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:17The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
"Do not allow the tribe of the families of the Kohathites to be cut off from among the Levites;18“Let not the tribe of the clans of the Kohathites be destroyed from among the Levites,
but in order that they will live and not die when they approach the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons will go in and appoint each man to his service and his responsibility.19but deal thus with them, that they may live and not die when they come near to the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint them each to his task and to his burden,
But the Kohathites are not to go in to watch while the holy things are being covered, or they will die." 20but they shall not go in to look on the holy things even for a moment, lest they die.”
Then the LORD spoke to Moses:21The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
"Also take a census of the Gershonites, by their clans and by their families.22“Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses and by their clans.
You must number them from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, all who enter the company to do the work of the tent of meeting.23From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, all who can come to do duty, to do service in the tent of meeting.

"All the service of the Gershonites, whether carrying loads or for any of their work, will be at the direction of Aaron and his sons. You will assign them all their tasks as their responsibility.27All the service of the sons of the Gershonites shall be at the command of Aaron and his sons, in all that they are to carry and in all that they have to do. And you shall assign to their charge all that they are to carry.
This is the service of the families of the Gershonites concerning the tent of meeting. Their responsibilities will be under the authority of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. 28This is the service of the clans of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their guard duty is to be under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
"As for the sons of Merari, you are to number them by their families and by their clans.29“As for the sons of Merari, you shall list them by their clans and their fathers’ houses.

and the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their sockets, tent pegs, and ropes, along with all their furnishings and everything for their service. You are to assign by names the items that each man is responsible to carry.32and the pillars around the court with their bases, pegs, and cords, with all their equipment and all their accessories. And you shall list by name the objects that they are required to carry.
